Turf (laying and cost)

Found 13th Mar 2010
I have been taking up the old paving slabs in my back garden to change it to grass.

How much should I pay for a roll of turf?

Do I need a topsoil or sand layer or something else before I lay it?

topsoil, well flattend (can use heels of your wellies while you wear them) then spiked with fork
wanna make sure the topsoil you use is all the same and well mixed, or you will get patches of richer green grass

cant help with prices though

and boy, every day for the next couple of months till the roots dig down, you will be watering it!

most garden centers that sell it sell it cheaply on a monday around 50p a roll as it has short shelf life but lots of times its still in good condition

Steal some astroturf from local sports centre.. Low maintenance

I have been thinking of this, the grass in my garden is useless, so I was going to get some turf and just chuck it on top. Diddnt think I would need to water it, rains all the bloody time mun!

we got cheapo turf from b & q and it was fine

we did parts of our garden last year and we called b&q found out what day they get their new turf (a friday round here) so thena couple of thursday evenings we went to b&q and bought up the old turf at 25p-50p a roll instead of about £2.50 as they want to clear out the older stuff each week before the new delivery comes in. saved us a fortune and it only took about 5-10 days for the browned grass to turn green again.

we sprinkled a tiny amount of compost we had left over on the soil under the new turf then watered it everyday for about 2-3 weeks and you would never know now that it was poorly to start with.

Thanks for that i will give them a try for £6.99 its worth a go. Rep added

i wouldnt bother trying the rocks in the water bowl trick it doesnt work, my mum had 3 dogs and tried this for months, didnt make any difference at all. the only effective way she has found is to have a watering can outside the back door and if & when she sees them pee she just waters the grass a little afterwards, this then dilutes the wee and therefore stops the grass dying.
