Philips 50PUS6272 50 Inch 4K UHD Ambilight Smart TV With HDR. £399 at Argos if you can find stock. Available elsewhere too. Good reviews.
All smart tv's are pretty clunky - better to us a decent android box.

Wrong. My Samsung interface is smooth af.
Most of the Sonys under £500 don't use Android. IIRC the cheapest model that does is the XE80 which starts at £499 in 49".

I've only had a play with Android TV on a Sony and while It's not brilliant, it's perfectly usable. I'd also agree with zzzz, none of the TV interfaces are brilliant pieces of software design. Even those that are more responsive, and none of them will open a catch-up app anywhere near as fast as your computer, tend to have clunky design and layout choices.

Thanks for the feedback. I’ll have a look into the Philips as well as the Sony’s
Any info on the new TCL TVs our later this month?
Perhaps still too early for reviews of these!
I think it might be between the Philips 49PUS7502 and the Sony XE8004.
