    TV Licence advice please

    Need some advice please...

We have BT vision but don't have an aerial feed to it (we don't have the aerial feed wired up) so we can watch the replay things but obviously not live feed programmes.

Do we need a TV licence?

Had a bit of an argument on the phone with one lady as she said we did because we have things like an xbox 360, laptop etc... but if we don't watch TV on them why should I pay for a TV Licence?

TV licence is for a tv

But on their website it says...

You need to be covered by a valid TV Licence if you watch or record television programmes as they're being shown on TV. This includes the use of devices such as a TV, computer, mobile phone, games console, digital box or DVD/VHS recorder.

    we don't do this

If its capable of receiving live TV you need a licence, if its not then you don't....I think!

exactly what I thought, but like I said the flipping woman said I need one because of having an xbox 360, laptop, pc etc... they said they will send someone around to check our home so I want to make sure we are in the right and don't end up with a fine

just remember they have to ask to come into your house, to which you can say no. also they're not allowed to look in cupboards (i think) so if its a small TV it can be hidden. lol

Lol it wouldn't fit in a cupboard but in all seriousness I don't mind them coming to look as long as Im in the right otherwise I'll end up with a big fine, Id rather just pay for a tv licence

I believe this to be correct. However if you do ever use a device to receive live TV you will be required to get one and if you are just trying to avoid paying for one I would recommend to,as they are pretty hot on catching people

Can't stress this enough - they have NO Right to enter your home. without a Police Officer and a Warrant Hell I wouldn't even answer the door to them!

so because we don't have the live aerial feed wired up we don't need a TV … so because we don't have the live aerial feed wired up we don't need a TV licence?

Provided nothing you watch or record is being simulcast (such as MOTD shown simultaneously online and on TV), no, you don't

Nope we don't watch any TV online, literally the only TV we watch is the replay stuff on BT vision

Im not just trying to get out of paying for a licence I just don't see why I should have to pay if I don't watch live TV. If I watched live TV I'd pay, Ive always paid for a TV Licence but now we don't watch live TV I didn't think I needed one anymore

You don't, but be warned they are quite aggressive (and unfair) in their tactics to persuade you that you do, and harass you for not doing so. Be prepared for at very least a monthly letter asking why you have no licence.

    Fantastic, thanks for everyones help

If you use the equipment to watch live tv (whether that be via aerial, satelite, cable, internet, mobile etc) then you need a license. If you watch catch up tv then you don't need one (tvcatchup.com requires a license). I would recommend de-tuning any equipment etc just to make sure.

as long as the tv does not receive a live signal or you do not watch a live broadcast online then you do not require a tv license.

all tvs can receive a live signal, otherwise it would be called a monitor!

Also they kept sending letters saying they'd send round enforcers to check and I emailed telling them I'd told them I don't have a TV and they could come and check and they hadn't and to stop harassing me with threatening letters or I'd take them to court for harassment, got an apologetic email and no more letters.

Lol well if they do keep harassing me I'll have to try an email!

I know people keep saying I need one if I watch tvcatchup and stuff online but I don't watch that. Literally the ONLY thing we watch is replay things on BT Vision thats it, nothing on any of the computers, mobiles nothing else at all

which clueless idiots would those be considering the whole thread is saying you don't need one?

I haven't had a licence for 9 years, so don't believe anyone that says that they are hot on catching people.

The only people they catch are the numpties that admit they watch the TV, or the bigger ones that let them in their house.

whoops wrong wording, see what happens when i try to multitask.

I wonder if I can get away with not paying my TV licence this year (just come in), as there is a few seconds delay from the actual broadcast to my receiving it via digital (I used to notice this when switching between analogue and digital) . Surely that delay means the broadcast isn't live

You need TV licence if you are receiving live feed or live signal in any way shape or form.

If it's not live then you don't need to pay.

oO I just thought everyone who owned a colour tv had to have a license and only black and white ( many years ago i know !) where exempt

Ahh goody, another TV License thread. Isn't it funny that the TV License people leave people not sure whether they need a license, and some people are paying it just so they don't have the hassle, with other people deliberately being given wrong information.

Yeah a bit unfair isn't it! Well if I don't have to pay I'm not paying!
