Your 5.1 from Argos are speakers only.
You tv will only put out Stereo on its own.
As it says in the argos article "Use with a product that has a Dolby decoder.".
You will need to buy a surround sound amplifier to get this lot to work.

Hate to tell you that you can't get surround sound with that setup.

The problem is that the speaker system does not have a Dolby Digital decoder built in.

Can you return the speakers? The best option would be something that has either a Digital Coaxial or Optical connection and a built in decoder:

I think this item fits the bill, but check it first.

Yes connect the Audio L (white) and Audio R (red) from the back of the TV into the subwoofer (big speaker box) inputs

This will give you sound from the speakers

On the back of the TV one of the 3 pairs of the red and white plugs will be 'Audio Out', that is the pair to use, the other 2 will be 'Audio In'.

From the picture I cant tell which is which, you will have to look in the manual or look at the back of the TV to see if there's any writing to tell you what each one is

    Help us, help you.

Read the labels next to the sockets, look at the instruction manuals for both devices.

rep added for all that helped cheers

The only audio out is a headphone jack which is situated to where the ?dvb/freeview? card is inserted.

The 3 red and white jacks are for av-sound, component-sound, and hdmi-slot2

On the back of the subwoofer each pair of red and white sockets will be linked to one of the buttons on the front, it doesn't matter which pair he plugs into but he will have to find what button switches the sound on.

The ideal would be to switch the subwoofer on, press the 'TV' button (if there is one, I can't tell from the picture) and try plugging the red & white plugs into each set until he gets sound.
