    TV zapped, replacement needed!

The TV got zapped by lighting a couple of weeks ago. We've just got the £300 it cost us back, as the TV is discontinued (Toshiba 24" CRT).

I would like to try a similar sized LCD TV, ideally with 5 years warranty and under £500 (already checked John Lewis - nothing in the price range that grabs my fancy).

Any deals, pointers or advice would be great!

    Hi Rusty

Woolworths will be selling a 32" LCD with HDMI connections tomorrow for £400.

But if you use the 10% discount voucher found on this site + buy it via quidco you'll get an extra 5% off. You can pick it up in store to save on delivery costs.

    That will come to £340.

It's slightly over budget, but it is big and looks decent and has HDMI, which you simply won't get in this price range.

I'll have a further look round for you in a minute...

Will get you a 19" sammy for £281.99 delivered. If you like iPod white, then this is nice. Or, you can get it in black. A bit smaller but it's a good looking set and picture quality is fantastic. Oh, and it has a 5 year warranty.

You can also buy this from Dixons for £284.91 + £9.99 delivery. But if you buy via an Egg card, you get 5% off, which brings it down to : £280.16.

I'm looking for something similar size and price for my bedroom, and these are the ones that I've been considering.

    Oh, and check this out:

£3.84 for a surge protector - to protect your new investment!

If it's not a main TV you're after and just an occasional one for the bedroom or suchlike, you could consider this:

It's an SVGA DLP projector by Hewlett Packard for £300 + around £5 delivery. I have one and it's very very good. It's kind of big compared to more modern ones, but the picture is decent and moreover, you can make it around 8ft high with a short throw distance.

I project onto a beige wall, and the picture quality is perfectly acceptable and XBox just ain't the same with a TV now!

    Very helpful posts thekanester

    Cheers, dude!

Many thanks for the replies - very useful links thekanester:)

Unfortunately the TV got zapped through the aerial (a number of neighbours were also affected). There's not an aerial surge protector available, is there??

This is the 'main' TV, but we only have a small room, so don't want it to dominate the room. The sammy with 5 year warranty seems the biz.

    Any more suggestions out there?

We always buy Sony tvs. September is sale month for them. Their best bargains are usually in-store only, where they are moving out all the old models to make room for the new. Our last purchase was 3-4 years ago and was just above half price. The relacement models were virtually the same spec with a different facia and cover.

    Top tip Palspal!

I went to the local Sony store yesterday and got me a right bargain (IMO). As I walked in their was a 21" CRT Nicam etc TV sitting on the floor. I asked if it was for sale - it was, for £99 with full 12 months warranty. Ex display model with a few minor scratches on the top, but otherwise perfect.

Maybe not the sexiest or most up to date telly in the world, but perfect for now.:)

    Great news!

September is favourite but when you're ready for a newer model, ask anytime about their stock. 4 years ago my son was offered a brand new Wega model at a greatly reduced price at the Sony Kingston branch because they couldn't find the stand. The stands are very bulky and he didn't have room for it anyway.

He has bought other products from them and can't pass any Sony store without checking. He bought a camcorder for half the previous week's price because the newer model had just been delivered.
