Great if you're a U2 fan or if you just want to watch The Edge walk off the stage.

U2 will play a free concert in Trafalgar Square when the MTV Europe Music Awards come to London.

The rock band are being honoured with the global icon award at this weekend’s ceremony — and will celebrate with the free show.

Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr will perform on Saturday evening in central London for MTV Presents Trafalgar Square.

Some of the gig will then be broadcast during the event the following night.

MTV is running a ballot for free tickets to the 7,000-capacity event, which went live at midday today and will close at 10pm tomorrow.

The band will be handed the award at the EMAs, which take place at the SSE Arena in Wembley on Sunday. It is the first time the event has been hosted in London for 21 years. Former recipients include Whitney Houston and Queen. Speaking about U2’s award and the gig, Bruce Gillmer, head of music and music talent for Viacom, which owns MTV, said: “Their performance for Londoners in historic Trafalgar Square is just the beginning of the electrifying celebration of music where artists from every corner of the world will unite in this extraordinary city.”

U2 met at Mount Temple School, Dublin, and formed in 1978. They have released 13 studio albums and won 22 Grammys.
