UK ‘Pirates’ To Get 20-Day Grace Period After Each Warning

    Editor
UK Internet providers will soon begin sending piracy warnings to subscribers whose accounts are used to share copyright-infringing material. The associated "Get It Right" campaign has now published a detailed website, answering the most asked questions, while adding some new information as well.

In an effort to lower piracy rates in the UK, rightsholders have reached an agreement with leading ISPs to send “educational emails” to alleged copyright infringers.

The initiative, branded the “Get It Right” program, is expected to start any day now. In anticipation of the launch, the campaign’s official information portal has quietly been made available online.

It is expected that the emails will point suspected copyright infringers to this site where they can find pretty much any answer they need about the campaign. “Are you monitoring my online activity,” for example, or “Will this programme shut down my internet connection?”

“After an Educational Email has been sent, there is a 20 day grace period during which time you will not receive any further emails. However, if further copyright infringement activity occurs and is detected after the 20 day grace period, you may receive another email from your ISP,” the FAQ reads.

Almost three weeks is significantly longer than the 7-days the U.S. equivalent has. Also good to know is that if no other piracy incidents are recorded in the future, all data is scrapped from the database after 12 months.

“If no further infringements occur and are detected and verified to be associated with your account, you will receive no more Educational Emails. Furthermore, all data related to this and to previous Educational Emails will be deleted after 12 months.”

    Thoughts? Deterrent or mere annoyance?

And, I don't check my ISP email, nor was it ever set up

Why don't they do this to the rest of Europe? We are getting beaten to hell but if you use a French or German vpn you can access any torrent or such site you like....

    SuperEd

Will it apply just to Torrents or other services like Kodi?

Torrents as they use Peer to Peer. Having said that I think some Kodi streams are starting to use P2P the same.

Clearly France and Germany don't have anyone corrupt enough to be willing to rush through silly legislation in the dying days of a government in exchange for God-only-knows-what favours aboard David Geffen's yacht.

Targeting those who are sharing the content. Anyone who just streams (which I guess is probably a majority of users) will not even be targeted. Most of the sharers are outside UK anyway...

    use hide my ISP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Two emails straight to my spam folder then business as usual lol

use a vpn, a seedbox, or just rent a server if youre worried. most of the stuff only mentions about you personally uploading/seeding so i believe you should be alright using kodi as i dont think you also upload as you are only streaming.

"get it right from a genuine site" ... NEWFLASH...I would if I COULD!

Is Arrival or Dr Strange on Netflix or Amazon? They're on Kodi.

Completely agree. I have no idea what my isp email is. Most people use google or outlook now and their isp often isnt aware of what their main email address is.

A paper letter to the property would at least get to me and my bin.

what about the legitimate stuff on torrents, lots of folk use it for non piracy related

    Does this include Plex?

The dying days of a government? Are you hoping comrade corbyn's about to take over? oO I doubt that.

    Laughable.

Oh and to the OP: Please don't insert words that don't apply. This is about file sharing NOT piracy.

So an email that'll go straight to most people's spam folders and never get seen.

I wonder what will follow. A strongly worded letter? oO

lol I await the email as my company uses torrents to distribute large files to keep our laptops up to date.

What about legit torrents i.e Linux distros that have torrent downloads?

verily this verbosity veers most verbose...vpn and proxies

    vpn thats me sorted

Let's ban the Somali pirates from our bandwidth for starters!

So what's the point in this if your ISP just send friendly letters?

Do you face being cut off? If not, what do they think this is going to achieve?

I knew you'd be on here Harry 'ducking and diving, wheeling and dealing' Redknapp.

Looks like back to the good old days then with all pirated stuff being sold under the counter in markets, car boot sales etc and where I used to work this chinese couple came around nearly every day selling films, games, software etc on dvd. If they didn't have it they could get it. That was about twelve / thirteen years ago. Broadband speed wasn't much better than dial up back then where I live but I don't think our ISP has entered into the agreement anyway.

I assume the letters will probably be based on specific files. I know in the past people have received emails saying "we know you downloaded Avatar.scr.mkv (example), this is protected by the mpaa blah blah blah.."
I would be surprised if you got an email for something legitimate or innocuous.

    lol

The transfer between you and the server is, but this doesn't mean the site aren't logging your IP and what you choose to download.

Your Internet provider will be able to see that you visited that site, but shouldn't be able to tell what data you download.

Thanks delusion. I use real debrid and they use https . Hopefully they wont take a closer look.

Silly waste of time and effort,Opera has a built in vpn.

Oh no, I am too scared to watch the new Game of Throne online now! Should I delete my C drive to get rid of all traces? I heard Alt+F4 is a good way, but afraid to find out what it will do.

Edit: didn't realise this could be a necro thread

Still nothing from talktalk so the vpn must be doing its job nicely

My ISP hasn't signed into the deal from what I can gather. Maybe they should just take the search engine and web browser developers to court for providing software that takes us to the land of torrent and land of addons. I just read an article today in my local rag which I think someone else has posted.

We all know you can buy a pre-loaded firestick or similar and I have seem them openly posted on fb and the auction site. Personally I think the police should concentrate their efforts on murderers, terrorists, drug dealers, rapists and burglars and leave the guys making 20 quid on a firestick alone. I am sure there are bigger crooks possibly wearing suits that they should be concentrating their efforts on not forgetting the people who import all the dodgy gear from eastern europe and the far east which can kill. I guess the odd fatal injury or death is nothing compared to the mighty corporates losing a few quid.
