Unmountable Boot Volume on Dell Inspiron

Hi, I'm hoping that someone can help. My son has a Dell Inspiron 1501 which is about 4 years old. I had an extended warranty on it, which ended about a month ago. I didn't bother to renew the cover because the laptop is old, but obviously now it's out of warranty it's decided to fail!

In November 2008 there was an "unmountable boot volume" blue screen and it was sent to Dell for (I believe) a new hard drive. I now have the same error back. Hard Drive DST short test gives Error code: 0146. Msg error code 2000-0146. Msg: Unit0: DST Log containing previous errors. Hard drive read test gives Error code 0F00:0244. Msg: Block 65068456: Uncorrectable data error or media is write protected.

I don't have a clue where to start, but it would be really good if I somehow get the laptop to limp on through until March (son's birthday) and ideally not lose all of the data again.

The first step I'd recommend is to buy a USB sata adapter - these are fairly inexpensive little kits (around a tenner or less) that will allow you to connect the hard drive to another PC over USB. That way you can see if you can mount the drive and have a look at the state of the data and retrieve what you need. If the drive won't mount at all or almost all the data is garbage, there's a good chance the drive is failed and you can do nothing with it. However if most of the data looks ok it may be just corruption in the OS files, once you have the data off it you can try putting the operating system back on.

Most commonly I tend to find this error means it's a hardware fault with the hard drive although it may not be the cause for your machine.

Thanks John - I've just bought an adapter, so fingers crossed I'll be able to get back at least some of the data.

nomeames - thanks, I tried the PSA test - that's how I found the error messages (which mean nothing to me!!).

Seen this error hundreds of times.

Boot from an XP cd.
When it's finished loading press 'R' for recovery console.
When you get a prompt (may need to follow some onscreen instructions first), type:
chkdsk /r
Press enter.
Go make a cup of tea.

Reboot when finished.

They're well worth the money as I use mine frequently, I prefer to attempt to back up the data first so I know I've got as much as I can then start trying to repair the system - that way I don't have the worry of losing data if repair tools make the problem worse.
