Modern boards tend to run even without a CPU - my guess is that it would be a minor incompatibilty and it would allow you to update, but very hard to know. My advice is to contact the manufacturer.

    is that European Number

quite often the update only adds the cpu name to the list so it doesn't say unidentified.
i'd be amazed if it wouldn't run for you to flash the bios

LOL! True. Sometimes it unlocks L2 or increases the frequency... Sometimes boards just bleep...

why not give the suppliers a call or email asking for them to do the update, whilst some above comments are true it's not guaranteed to boot at all so not worth the risk if you don't have access to a compatible processor to do the update.

I had a similar issue with a board when the Wolfdale Intel processors were released. Most boards have a fail-safe where you use 1 stick on memory in a certain dimm slot which forces a sort of safe-mode. Thus allowing you to flash the BIOS so you can use more than one stick of memory.
