    what does upscaling mean?

DVDs run at 720*576 (or *480 for US ones), but a HDTV can be at 1280*720, 1366*768, 1920*1080. To display on it a different number of pixels the image has to be scaled, via software making semi-intelligent guesses at intervening pixels.

Problem with upscaling players is that all HDTVs upscale. They simply have to, or they couldn't display any standard def content at all. The question then is whether the DVD is better at it than the display. Frankly, I'd expect most cheap ones won't be. If that's the case, all you're doing is shifting the point of scaling from the TV to the player, which doesn't achieve much :-(

Fair enough, if you get good reviews for a player and know your TV isn't that hot at scaling, then fire away.
