    Upscaling DVD player

    Keep missing the various specials that have been on here of late.

    Looking for a reputable make & model for as little money as poss - have to fork out for pricey LCD telly aswell!

    Anyone know of any deals to be had?

    Hi, I have bought two of these HDMI dvd players below and all i can say is they are fantastic, they have everything you will ever need in a dvd player, i one hooked up to my 42" HD tv in the living room plus the same in my bed room, i put my dvds on to my usb hard drive and which the films from that which are fantastic looking, hope this helps.     I bought my Sony DVP-NS76H for abou £60 on ebay.

    I saw a deal at ebuyer for one roughly £22 (after google checkout) on this site a few days ago .. depends on what price you're willing to pay though..

    Daveshop - so will that play divx and avi straight from a usb pendrive AND an external hard drive?

    samsungs run out at around the 45 quid mark...id suggest gettin one that is the same make as your telly if poss...then the remote should work with both units

    Hi, I've played lots of avi's, mpegs, divx (supports latest version of divx aswell) plus wmp movies without any problems, all played straight from my 80gb usb drive which i transfer videos from my pc. Regards Dave

    what does upscaling mean?



    DVDs run at 720*576 (or *480 for US ones), but a HDTV can be at 1280*720, 1366*768, 1920*1080. To display on it a different number of pixels the image has to be scaled, via software making semi-intelligent guesses at intervening pixels.

    Problem with upscaling players is that all HDTVs upscale. They simply have to, or they couldn't display any standard def content at all. The question then is whether the DVD is better at it than the display. Frankly, I'd expect most cheap ones won't be. If that's the case, all you're doing is shifting the point of scaling from the TV to the player, which doesn't achieve much :-(

    Fair enough, if you get good reviews for a player and know your TV isn't that hot at scaling, then fire away.
