Upscaling DVD player - Is it worth it ???

Found 9th Oct 2007
Just got a new 37" LCD & am using it with Sky+ SD & a Sony DVD player which is a few years old.

Just wondering if its worth getting an upscaling DVD player to play my standard DVD collection.

Probably looking at something like this amazon.co.uk/Sam…8-1

Would the improvement be worth the cash or should I just wait a year or so before getting a HD DVD player once the format war has settled a bit?

Cheers for any advice.

I thought everyone was going blue ray personally

If you have a Xbox 360 then that automatically upscales DVD's for you so would save you the money.

If not then i'd hold fire until one or the other wins the battle.

I think they are £35 at Aldi at the moment

GOD DAMN YOU SONY!! :x :giggle:

So did I, at a car boot in the 90's fantastic, massive though and loud, Honestly it was bigger than a tower pc on its side.

Have you tried your DVD player with the TV yet? Personally I think it's worth getting an upscaling player as they're not that expensive and an upscaled signal looks better.

The format wars are going to take a whlie to settle down, unfortunately it's look possible that both formats can co-exist so definitely no point rushing out for one of the players now.

For the record though I haven't gone blu-ray, hd dvd for me - the lack of any region coding is great.

Yep I've been using the old DVD with the new telly & to be honest its not bad. It would be interesting to compare the old next to a new upscaler to see if the improvement really is that noticable.

If you need a new player, then definately worth it. I'd probably go for one that plays DiVX as well. (I bought a samsumg about a 18 months ago when I bought the Panny PX60.) If not, then hang fire. Personally Im still not too convinced on BR or HD-DVD. Ive probably got over 800 DVDs and I certainly aint gonna replace them. The leap from VHS to DVD was enormous and the gain in quality and "features" made it worthwhile. I'm not gonna argue that the picture quality is a big improvement, but its not that big to warrant. Im still very happy with DVD - which is not the case when DVDs came out and watched VHS, with the improvements that gave.

Its defiantely better. But you wouldnt notice the difference at distance. Id say the say for HiDef as well, but to a lesser extent.

And why is it that they advertise HDTV's on TV (like Sony Bravia)?

If you have one the picture looks good, so why get another. Or if you don't and are still on the old pre-HD tv..."Hey, it doesn't look any different to this cheap old tv that I'm watching it on".

One of lifes mysteries :giggle:
