Hundreds of thousands of books published and you can only think of Harry Potter.

Go with that.

Send him in his dads clothes, that way he can say he's Gulliver

Horrid Henry?

William Brown from the Just William stories?

well, think of one then

how old is he, and what books does he like?
Mine have done a variety, from cinderella, to rapunzel, to heidi, scooby doo, and a few different animals.
Best way is to work out what items you have, what you can adapt and go with that. Raggy soot stained clothes and send him as oliver twist, easy peasy!

He's 8 - maybe oliver twist. thanks, any others

black suit, bit of padding, top hat = fat controller from thomas tank engine

pirate outfit = smee or captain hook from peter pan

red and black stripy top, black shorts, spiky hair = denis the menace

lion costume = aslan from chronicles of narnia OR evacuee clothes for peter or edmund?

vampire costume = dracula

Send him as Stig of the Dump and it'll only cost you a bin liner ha ha

In all seriousness what about Peter Pan, Sherlock Holmes, Tin Tin or Robin Hood.

Jim Hawkins, the boy in Treasure Island.

Tom Sawyer
Huckleberry Finn
Mowgli
Spiderman
Charlie (chocolate factory)
Peter Pan
Karate Kid

Mine done this a few times by the age of 9 my son refused to dress up so he went as himself as he has one of them books with his name placed in the story and took the book with him so he could smuggly say to teacher, " I am in a book!".

More ideas here
and here

Have you got a pirate outfit? You could add a plastic hook for a hand and send him as Hook.

the kids turn up in anything they got at home!! so power rangers, spiderman...etc! really anythng goes!!

Where's Wally?

A cat in the hat costume would be easy enough to make.

just lifted this comment from MSE...
"my son who is 10 went as captain underpants on thursday.
It was his idea and it was a really cheap outfit to do. I bought some adults y fronts (25p) and sewed them onto the outside of a pair of joggers, then I bought a white t shirt (2 for £2 matalan) and wrote capitain underpants on the front. I had a old red t shirt that had a hole in the front so I cut up the back and sewed it onto the back of the t shirt for a cape. My son really enjoyed being captain underpants and he was the only one at school.

Every time this question gets asked I always tell the same story, so here goes....

When I was about 9 we had to do the same thing, either I didn't tell my mum or she was useless (i forget) but I went in my normal clothes, she gave me a wooden spoon and told me I was George from George's marvellous medicine.

Always an option.......

Dye hair red, go as one of the Weasleys. Even better if your kid is already a ginger.

One of the Mr Men... Mr Bump would be really easy, blue clothes and bandages
Wheres Wally
Tin Tin
Max from where the wild things are
saucepanman from the faraway tree
The Mad Hatter
The Snowman

Mr Men is my best idea!

thanks for all the suggestions, ended up making him a tee-shirt with Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
Seems happy enough with it and was dead simple.

Thanks to all
