personally i have always gone for the highest optical zoom my £ could buy, as this gives nice clear proper zoom, wheras digital zoom becomes blocky the higher you zoom in

Thanks Jay. Two have 3xoptical and the other has 4xoptical. Do all have digital zoom as two are not listed as having it? So lost!

why is that tony? it's 2mp less! sorry if this is a ridiculously stupid question

Bought one for the daughter and takes really nice pics for the money, As for the 12mps its practically impossible to tell the difference between 12 and 10 ,

    Megapixels are not everything.

For most of us a 5mp or 6mp camera is fine. But companies have been trying to cram more and more megapixels into their cameras, but it does not always produce better quality pictures.

To be honest I would totally ignore digital zoom. Optical zoom is where the lens goes in and out and this will give you a good picture all the way through the zoom. Digital zoom wont.

Note that the lens is probably the most important thing. You could have a 50 megapixel camera, but if it had a cheap plastic lens the pictures would be awful. On the other hand you could have a 5mp camera, but a great lens, and the pictures would be wonderful.

Here is a picture that may help you understand why megapixels are not everything.

If you look at the light green "box", that is what you get with a 10 mega pixel image.

Now look at the dark green box that is slightly bigger. This is 12mp, but as you can see you are only gaining a very thin strip along each side, hardly worth bothering about.

In fact if you look at the difference between 6mp and 12mp you dont gain that much.

And as I said, some camera companies are trying to cram MORE pixels on the device that captures the image (the CCD) so actually producing a worse image.

A good 6 mp camera is better than a poor 12mp one.

Note if you are going to buy any of these cameras you will also need:

Memory card (they all come with very small memory, enough for only half a dozen pictures)

Rechargable batteries (the batteries will not last long so get rechargable)

Battery recharger (may be able to get a combined battery and charger unit from say Argos).

Its a common thought by the general public, they think more pixels mean better picture thats why they are always bringing them out with more ,but sadly that is not the case, more pixels does not mean better
