Urgent help please - getting Win XP onto a SATA drive with Win 7 pre-installed

OK folks I am stumped here and have not found the answer via google.

Got a new laptop for my old Dad but it has Win 7 preinstalled and I want to put XP Pro onto it as that's what he knows well - I have XP Pro SP3 install CD and valid COA.

The laptop came with Win 7 HP installed on teh 160 gig WD SATA drive.

Every time I try to run teh XP install CD I get teh error / BSD shown in next post.

I have tried foramtting the SATA drive outside of the laptop

I have tried FDISKing the drive from a Win 98SE bootable CD and removing all partions then creating one primary logical partion

I know I have done this before on another laptop sometime ago when I did not want Vista on a Dell I got a few years ago but cannot get it to work this time.

I think I have to instyal some RAID / chipset frivers via the F6 function but the laptop has bo floppy drive

any ideas how to overcome this problem will be much appreciated.

thanks

EliTom

I'd personally just leave windows 7 on it really is not that different, and you can turn off all the extra features so it even looks like windows xp. They are dropping support for win XP this year so its best not to be running it.

But what you need to do is insert the win xp disc set the bios to boot from dvd drive first, then go through until it says what hard drive to install, format it, then install it as usual.

valid point but for now at least XP is better for my Dad (78 yo ) and for me as remote training is never good!

thanks

you might find it hard to get drivers some of the recent chipsets and things like sound, gfx etc for win xp.
some manufacturers aren't supporting it anymore, its 9 years old.

best stick with win7 and choose classic design

go into the bios and turn off AHCI (i think thats what its called) i had this exact problem last year when installing XP onto a mate's new dell (came with vista) its to do with SATA drivers. the native drivers in xp aren't compatible. once you get xp up and running you can turn it back on with no problems

Its a Compaq CQ61 and all teh Win XP drivers are on the HP website

is it a genuine disc, This just sounds like a problem with the disc as it only needs one or two files corrupted or not copied perfectly and windows will not install.

yep thats what I had to do before

Unfortunately the Compaq CQ61 BIOS does not have an option to turn of AHCI and enable IDE compatability mode

looks like I am screwed :whistling:

one is genuine XP pro but only SP1 and another is an iso but with SP3 - same with both discs

when booting off an xp disk it does not contain the sata drives to load it onto your sata hard drive. You need to downlaod the sata driver for your appliance and load that when trying to format xp.

looks like this will work

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp36001-36500/sp36131.exe

yeah thats the conclusion I am coming to, but never had this problem before

Is the SATA drivers relatetd to the mobo chipset or the HDD?

how do I load them during the install with a floppy drive - after using F6 during install win XP looks for a floppy drive?

it will never have happend before as you will have been installing xp on an ide drive, only in vista onwards did instilation disks include stat drivers, so now it is a sata drive and you are trying to install xp from a disk that has no sata drivers.

v frustrating.

Have a read of that guide and it should help you,

any update on how you got on?

I've had this. You need to build a custom XP cd and incorporate the correct SATA drivers. ICH8, or something along those lines.
1) find out what the controller model is. ICH8, etc.

The tool you need to make a custom book cd is ]http//ww…tml

You will need to create a custom xp bootable cd on a different machine, and burn it to a CD/DVD accordingly
The program has a wizard that asks what drivers to incorporate, during this stage you browse to the location of the right storage driver.

Good luck.
