U.S. backed forces have recaptured the Syrian city of Manbij from Islamic State.

It is hard to imagine that the destiny of Syria might be shaped by somewhere with half the population of Slough or Blackpool. But the liberation of Manbij from Islamic State occupation on Friday has significance out of proportion to the town’s small size.

The most important consequence is that Isil have now lost one of their most important pathways for smuggling arms and fighters from over the Turkish border, just 25km away, into Syria and onward into the ever-smaller caliphate.

More than 2,000 hostages have been freed from IS by this victory.

I'm hoping to find common ground and steer our contentious misc discussions in a more productive direction.

Do you actually love the confrontation that you obviously wind yourself up for ?

It's good news for people ISIS held captive, but unfortunately those perpetrating such evil ideology will simply go on to take other towns hostage, until they are whipped out for ever.

Yes, but that's the point, this is a major step towards that end.

That wont be the end. As soon as ISIS are out of the equation we will see SDF backed by the US, UK etc fighting Assad's Armed Forces backed by Iran, Hezbollah and Russia for control of Syria - and nothing good will come of that.

It will never end, The only way it will end is if the people of Syria fight back rather than running away etc..

I for one agree it's good news. I'm sure it brings hope for a lot of Syrians.

While you have millions of people basing their lives on voices from the sky and thousand year old books there will always be a percentage who use it to excuse murder and brutality, until the ME drags itself up from a self imposed dark age and into line with the rest of the civilised world there will always be trouble, especially when there is billions of $ in oil money washing around.

Insurance won't be required for most Brits travelling to Syria as they generally don't go for the jaunt
