    USB's damaged on laptop

Hi there! I have an HP nc4000 laptop which has two USB ports which are no longer useable (pins damaged and broken) and I was wondering if there are any adapters of dongles which can utilise the others ports on my laptop to give me a working USB port. I've tried a PCMIA to USB card but this card needs power from another USB port to make it function properly, hence no good. Any suggestions would be grateful? Thanks Matt

You can get a PCMCIA card (usually only on eBay) which has two or four usbs. I use on myself.

yeah i tried this but the card i purchased only works if it is powered from another USB port, but because the ones on my laptop dont work this card is no good to me. Did the card you purchase have it own power supply or does it just get it from the PCMIA slot itself?

Does your wireless router have USB input?

Yes that will be a problem then, but if you find a 2 x USB one, one of them will work without extra power, as long as the thing you are connecting to it does not draw to much power. Apart from that, I think your only recourse is to get the laptop fixed.

    Good point:thumbsup:

I don't have wireless, so would never have thought of this.

No my wireless router doesn't have a USB input, if it did do you mean i could access my files through the built in wi-fi on my laptop. So if i got a pcmia card which only had two USB ports one of the ports should have enough power for USB memory stick to work on without external power? The pcmia card i currently have is a 4 x usb one so does this mean it needs the external power to get any one of the four to power a USB memory stick?

A two port card will work. I had one for my Compaq until I misplaced it. Both ports worked, but only one device could be used, otherwise it would crash the laptop.

Is it only for addition memory? You can get a PCMCIA card for SD cards and use the SD in an adapter for another computer.

I wonder if a powered USB hub connected to the PCMCIA adapter you already have might work?

Some of these devices do, but my one does not. As soon as you put a USB device in it the Laptop crashes. The dual port ones (if you can find them) are ok.

I'll let you into a little secret (maybe worth contacting HP), the company I work for...I shall name no names...have a deal with HP that the USB's on the back (common problem on the NC4000) are fixed free of charge for the life of the laptop!!!

We have the same arrangement for faulty screen hinges etc...

...hope that helps - GOOD LUCK.

The thing is though i bought the laptop off a certain auction site and have no proof of purchase/ reciepts etc so i assume if i contacted HP i wouldn't have a leg to stand on would i? The hinge on the laptop has also broken aswel as the USB ports, sounds like a common problem. Cheers for the advice.

Dont need proof of purchase push HP about the known fault and they will repair our company has the same deal with HP.
We have several thousand and had 1000's fail on hinge and usb

Just tried with HP to get them to repair it and say that my laptop is out of warranty and i will have to pay for the chrages. They also state that they have no known information about the USB or hinges being a common fault.

I'm sorry but HP are not telling you the truth...keep pushing them...I am sure they'll give in in the end - I hope so.
