Used car needed - decisions decisions...

    Hello!

I have unfortunately got to buy a used car as mine has been written off. ish.

Looking at cars between 5k to 6.5k max. 4 years or newer - not french! lol

    Hatchback - 5 door.

So far I think Ive narrowed it down to:

    Toyota corrola/avensis
    Ford Focus
    Mazda 2 or 3

Any thoughts? Other possibilities for a reliable car at that pricerange? Need one fast as hire car only for next 10 days max...

A Toyota would be a great choice but may be more expensive than your other options.
Ford Focus should be cheap and they are good cars. So i would say a Focus due to the value for money.

    Mazda 3 great cars:thumbsup:

just bought a mazda 3, already have a mazda 6... great cars , very very reliable, stylish, comfy etc

id get a BMW if you can get one for 6k

i would say wat abt a VW polo but reliability isnt quite wat its cracked up to be so toyota or mazda for reliability

    Thanks :@)

The hire car I have now is an 09 ford focus. Its great but probably has more features than one I could afford from 06/07... I believe a diesel model would be best from what Ive heard too...

A mazda 3 is very tempting but hard to find in price range. Mostly 1.2's and I would ideally like a 1.6

I drive 350 miles a week... need reliability!

When my OH was after a used car I did lots of reading up, (reviews, Which! etc) seemed the best value and reliable car was a Ford Focus, so that's what he went for. (good boy)

Nah - would be taken the p out of too much by workmates.

The thing I find with the focus is there are sooooooooooo many models in the year 06/07 its difficult to chose one. The more features the better I guess but I cant find a list of models and features.

If you drive 350 a week, you need a diesel mate.

Another vote for a Mazda/Toyota - I'd also say Honda, but think they're out of the price range.

Ford Focus petrol are notorious for poor mpg - I'd avoid.

Honda would be GREAT - but as you say out of price range...

Just had a quick look - you could get an Avensis Diesel on a 06 plate for around £7k.

I wouldn't get a BMW - all sorts of problems with them, especially if they have non-standard parts fitted :whistling:

Cheers - just need to find one in the Southampton region now

I'd go for a Ford - lots of them about so parts (if needed) are easy to get.

Avensis D4D is a good choice imo.

Avensis for under 7k near you here - diesel as well:

Most reliable car out there, unfortunately, they're mostly driven by old grannies.

Disagree on all counts. The Avensis is far better screwed together than any Vauxhall and significantly less likely to let you down. The 2.0 diesel is a bit lacking low down the rev range, the new 2.2 is a big improvement but will be out of your price range I think. I loved my 53 Avensis which never let me down over 30 thousand miles and replaced it with a Verso which has been similarly reliable.

Best of luck with car hunting and enjoy whatever you buy.

A VRS is a very nice motor

Have you thought about an Alfa 147?

Edited to add - we are currently looking at one, don't think it can be beaten for looks and that interior is just fantastic.

Not bad - Not too sure about the style of the front though...

    And driven by old men.:p

Go and view several models - see which one you prefer The 147 is lovely to be in, especially with full leather interior. If you didn't do so many miles and you weren't too fussed about running costs I'd recommend a 147 GTA ;-)

Or poles it seems around here! Ugly looking things but are well put together and have a good engine.

Yup, gotta feel sorry for us old Poles driving our reliable cars past all those broken down Vauxhalls and Alfas!:whistling:

Only kidding, the Alfa is gorgeous but again not as reliable as a Toyota. Depends how important your 350 miles a week are to you.

Think the Alfa reliability is a bit of a myth - certainly with the new models. We have three 147 rep mobiles at work and all three have seen less bills than a similar model Vauxhall Astra.

The Alfa would win on looks alone - I'd struggle to suggest a best all rounder although think the Fabia VRS could possibly be that car.

most car magazines slate alfa reliability so must be something in that.id personally go for the avensis just for the reliability.its hard to look flash broken down on hard shoulder lol

    Too small - but thanks

you say small but you really should check one out - deceptively spacious and uber versatile with magic folding seat system.

i drive focus astra etc at work and it just as roomy as one of those

Give up on that... BMW's are not great, cost a fortune to maintain and get joked about constantly. And indicators cost extra! :-D
