Using a usb device to reinstall Windows?

Ok my laptops dvd drive has died and I want to reinstall windows because due to the drive dying it kept crashing pc at startup so windows is laggy now and think has some corrupted files.

I have a 4 gig mp3 player, not one which has usb built in but like an ipod where you plug a cable into the pc and it to transfer.

Could I make this a bootable drive and install Vista from that?

Shouldn't be a problem unless your laptop bios is lacking decent USB support.

If you plug the MP3 player into the computer does it behave just like a normal flash drive?

Easiest way to check is to connect the mp3 player and have a look in the bios boot menu to see if it's listed.
