    Using mobile in Canada

My girlfriend is currently in Canada and she has her phone from the UK with her, it's unlocked as it used to be on virgin and is now on o2 and it is working over there as I can text her...my question is this, will she be able to buy a local sim card and put it in her phone so I can call her on it without her being charged???

She will get charged even with a local sim, that's the way it works over there.

Minutes come off both sides in Canada so as Crazy1 says there will be minutes taken off her plan for receiving calls also.

I think the only Canadian operator to do GSM is Rogers, so she'd need to get a Rogers sim. Also North America uses different GSM bands than UK so her mobile will need to be tri or quad band.

thanks, so even if she got a Rogers sim she would still be charged to receive a call...that sucks.

Rogers is the most widely available service provider but paying both ways sucks for those of us that enjoy free phones and free minutes.

Have a read of the above and get your GF drop into one of the independent shops they know a thing or two the others will not tell her.

what type of phone does she have as admin said its not gonna be much use to her if its not at least tri band

    Incoming Call Charges
Please note in Canada you pay exactly the same to receive a call as you do to make a call. However, all international calls received are charged at the local rate (15p/min)

The phone is fine, calling it would have been nice and convenient but she has access to a landline over there so I'll stick to using that...PS if anyone has an N series nokia, wi-fi and calls abroad alot, look into using truphone, I started using it yesterday and call canada anytime for as long as I want for free from my mobile while I'm in a wi-fi area.
