My son is moaning about his ping on our home broadband. (Have tried ethernet cable instead of wifi but he still moans about his ping)

We are with plusnet home broadband and get 17mb

With my EE phone, I get 75mb.

He can tether from my phone and seems much happier with his ping

I get unlimited data from EE because I am an NHS worker but when I am working weekends and evenings, my phone is with me at work.

He has a mobile with about 4gb data each month, so will probably need to get a different sim plan

How much data would he need each month if he tethered from his phone?

Would you recommend any other providers which piggy back on the EE network?
(I have heard that some limit tethering and some are speed capped)

If ping from your mobile data is better than your home broadband then something is amiss.

Ditch plusnet and get virgin media if its available in your area?Or …Ditch plusnet and get virgin media if its available in your area?Or encourage him to not play at the weekends. They shouldn't be playing every day anyway.

Its freezing outside so I could send him round to his mate's house to hang out, but that seems to be against the lockdown rules.

I don't like him playing the game but it seems to be the modern way of "hanging out with your mates"

Yes, 120GB of an unlimited plan is the max

We have tried everything to resolve this.

We are on the far end of our broadband exchange and this seems to be the problem.
Also, I assume that more people are online at the moment due to lockdown, so more stress on the landline broadband.
    - Have had new internal phone wiring installed, phone line to our street repaired and have had openroach come out to us twice.
    - have changed the router
    - have used ethernet cable from router to the ps5
    - have opened the ports on the router for the ps5

The mobile data seems to be the only option available to us.

Any serious gaming over a mobile network is pointless, you'll hit 100s of GBs and exceed any fair usage.

You could try to use something like this “TP-Link M7350 4G LTE MiFi” around £72 on Amazon. Also maybe worth checking if you can get 5G in your area as that should make a difference. But means more expenses to get a 5G device to tether from.

Three network is the cheapest with unlimited data.

I suggest you get 1 month 4G mifi to try it out.
£24 unlimited data for a month, min contract 1 month.

Once you receive it, fill in the form for cancellation online. This will give them 30 days notice to cancel the contract. And you keep mifi at the end.

Huawei mifi is £70 on amazon at the moment.

If you happy with the speed, you could get a smarty sim with unlimited data for £20

Or consider sign up three network with 12 months at affordable mobiles. They currently have redemption cashback deal which work out less than £5 a month if order through TCB.

The next cheapest unlimited data network would be voxi/ Vodafone.

I did a google search which says 25-100mb per hour for fortnite

Not sure what console is being quoted when this data figure is used

100mb per hour = 1gb for 10 hours of play.

Does the PS5 version of fortnite use more data than ps4 ????????? (edited)

All this for a game. Wow.

so what is the "ping" in ms you are getting? Download the ookla speed test app, try it on wifi, then on 4G.

    see what the ping is.

i found when i tethered on EE with my laptop, it eats data very quickly, much more so than using data on the phone so tethering is not a practical long term solution.

I have given in and have bought a sim from EE with unlimited data on a 24 month contract.

He is now tethering his PS5 from his phone.

It is a 5G sim card but we do not have 5g in our area at the moment.

The 4G does however achieve 50 - 80mb in our area and my son seems happy with his gaming.

The great thing about this sim is that I can "gift" upto 100GB of data to other family members each month.
    - This means that I can get cheaper monthly plans with less data for other family members and then top up as needed from this.
Eg get a 4gb sim for me, my wife and daughter but gift 33gb to everyone so we each get 37gb a month.

So I have checked how much data he used on his first day - after a heavy day of fortnite, he had used 2.8gb
    - I therefore estimate that even if he played all day every day during summer holidays (worst case scenario and extremely unlikely) then he would use 90-100gb a month which would be permitted by EE fair use policy

EE terms and conditions advise the following:

The following terms apply to customers who have taken a Pay Monthly handset or SIM plan with anunlimited data allowance since 28th August 2019.

Your inclusive data allowance is for personal, non-commercial use when in the UK and in the EU.

If you regularly tether 12 or more devices, we will consider this non-personal use and have the rightto move you to a more suitable plan.

We will consider usage above 600GB per month to be non-personal use and have the right to applytraffic management controls to deprioritise your mobile traffic during busy periods, or to move youto a business plan.

If you run your account you can gift up to 100GB of your data to others on your account. Data usageon an unlimited plan will decrement from giftable allowance. Any data boost allowance will beadded to the giftable allowance.A 50GB fair use policy applies outside UK.
