If I buy a V+ box without having Virgin media TV, off eBay for example, is there any way it would work legally? Eg. Can I just watch freeview on it?

Yes you would get some channels but it is illegal to buy or sell those boxes as they always remain the property of Virgin Media

Also Virgin have a habit now of physically disconnecting the houses from the cabinets so people can't use dodgy boxes
Also when I moved from London to Kent I was told my box can't be used in Kent as it is designed to work on the London Head End and not the Kent one, so you would need a box that is designed for your area

Note the above, virginmedia do prosecute for stolen boxes, as any boxes for sale by anyone are in fact stolen because they never sell boxes, they always remain the property of virginmedia

those that think the £150 (or £75)you paid for the box was payment for the box are mistaken, it was only a fitting fee.

Bit of a con isn't it

I'll also add that all the Virgin Media boxes have an uplink facility meaning that your box regularly communicates with Virgin Media so they know the exact location of the box / who it was originally issued to / where it's current location should be and how often you use it and even what you use it for

Yes and it's even more illegal than just owning the box
what about the boxes you can buy for £100 off ebay that update themselves-and get all the channels? friend has one and they watch all sports and movies free..

Legal to own
but illegal to use contravenes piracy laws
VirginMedia can sue you for even connecting it to a cable connection as it contravenes their contracts about connecting only their euipement and can sue for any damage done to their cable network by the box
laughable you might think but it has happened where boxes have developed a fault and shoved 230V down the cable line destroying thousands of £'s worth of equipment, extremely rare but it has happened
you'd still need the data cable for it to work you cant just plug the box in and connect the scart.
