VB1: I'm [not] taking my iPhone 4 back but it is faulty...

Meh.

After all my apple-fanboy-dom, after all the arguments and rows, I've decided to take the damn thing back.

"Why?" I hear upwards of 97% of the forum ask.

Well, although I am right handed, and my iPhone has a bumper case, when I take it out of the case and hold it "wrongly", my phone does indeed lose signal.

Now this wouldn't normally be a problem for me, but the problem is clearly so severe apple need to fix it. I don't believe for a minute that it isn't an almighty hardware **** up, so they are in a real mess.

When the new version comes out, if I keep my phone, I'll end up with a £600 phone with a severe design flaw that no one will want to buy come resale time.

I have to admit defeat. Ignoring all the lies and crap from apple - the phone is flawed, and even though it doesn't affect me directly, I'm not putting up with a £600 less-than-perfect phone.

Bummer.

Nice post. Takes a man to admit defeat. Thankfully mine seems unaffected.

What you thinking? HTC?

Although I feel for you, and am a fanboy myself, both me and the wife have failed to do recreate the signal issues...

Maybe we just aren't conductive enough?

Still I understand, and feel your pain. (Counselling session over, that'll be £50 please)

I think the perfect combo is an iPad and an Android phone. This will give you plenty of experience with both and when the android tablets start to come out with good spec (instead of the rubbish people are buying now) you will have a good position in which to make the best purchase

Take it they will give you full refund since they know the problem is theirs?

Right at risk of turning this into a mud slinging match, I will never go Android. I had a Desire review unit for a while and I just can't get into it (the OS I mean). I'll just keep my 3GS, which luckily I still have.

As for the signal issues, if I have full signal (or I'm on a vodafone sure signal box!), its not affected. It's only an issue if I:-

1) Remove all cases
2) Hold left handed
3) Cover the aerial seperator with my palm.

I didn't make it clear in the OP, but what I'm saying is, despite not being directly affected, if apple come up with iPhone 4.01 in a few weeks, I'll be up **** creek without a paddle, with an "early model" that everyone knows to avoid. Why should I pay £600 for a flawed unit, when I can buy a fixed model in a few weeks.

You get me brothers?

I would expect to get a refund no phone should do what the iphone 4 is doing with the signal,
its a faulty product therefore not fit for its purpose.

This one was started by me.

Even when my signal does "drop" I can still make calls.

I would rather Apple came out and unequivocally said that this is a design fault. Not user error.

I hope you post this in the word games too when they clog up the forum.

I would have done the same. The phone looks very pretty, but for £600 I would expect an antenna that isn't so susceptible to interference from physical contact.

Why not sell it on ebay mate and get £800+ for it? I'm thinking of flogging mine and buying another when back in stock!

What is Apple's official stance on this? Are they giving refunds to all who apply or just offering a different handset?

To all those commenting on refunds: I'm within 14 days, I can return it because it smells odd if I want.

If you bought it instore from apple, you also have 14 days. Other stores are different.

Mines from the apple website btw

Its OK to U Turn. It's your constitutional right!

So this was the phone you bought for £600 that you were 'bragging' about on your previous thread Shame it didn't work for you- hope there's a fix for this soon.

It can melt. Like the Ipod above.

Bad Times

Keep the faith as good always overcomes evil in the end

I firmly believe it's a problem on the majority of modern phones (Other vids on youtube of phones like the Nexus One experiencing it) - but made worse by iOS 4.. If you grip the iPhone 3GS with your right hand, does exactly the same thing with iOS 4.. Affect is not so noticable on 3.1.3:

youtube.com/wat…FN4

It seems more to be about timings when the connection is weakened by your hand, the calculators are not correctly adjusting when it attempts to look for a different tower.

I won't be getting a refund for mine - doesn't affect me really.. Even if they were to release a new revision in 2 months which fixed the problem, you can bet i'd be down the apple store the next day demanding an exchange (Which they'll very likely give, faaar to much press coverage on this for them not to).. and even If they didn't give me one, i'd be quickly submitting small claims court for the value of the replacement..

To be honest i've found the reception on the iPhone 4 leagues ahead of the iPhone 3GS - seems to be the experience for most aswell. Not had a drop call, the overall call quality is so much better than the 3GS and my 3G connection is solid all the time.

Have you not seen the fixes already?

Tiny piece of tape over the dent at the bottom and it fixes it.

But when paying £600 for a phone you kind of expect it to be able to work without bandaging it up.

Take it back and explain some of the fixes found on the net, they will be up to date if your taking back to apple (shop).

My friends have taken back units and had direct replacements.

Haha,

Oddly a single piece of insulation tape also doesn't fix it. However, the bumper case 100% fixes it.

Which makes me think apple found out about this in testing, and the bumper case IS the fix.

Hmm!

Maybe they done it on purpose for people to fork out an extra £25? (From the Apple store)

Saw a good joke the other day.

Steve Jobs came into our house on the weekend, and when he left, we noticed our Mr Sheen had gone.

****ing jobs stealing all our polish.

Have you any problems with the proximity sensor of the phone? I've seen me switching it to speaker phone while on a call by accident.
