VB1: Jonathan Ross leaves the BBC

    Banned
Jonathan Ross has announced he is leaving the BBC, after 13 years working for the corporation.

Ross, 49, who is one of the BBC's highest paid stars, said in a statement he had decided not to renegotiate his contract when it ends in July.

The star added that his decision to leave was not "financially motivated".

In 2008, the controversial host was suspended for making a series of phone calls to actor Andrew Sachs on Russell Brand's Radio 2 show.

One of the biggest stars at the BBC, Ross currently hosts his own Friday night chat show, Radio 2 show and a film review programme.

It was reported that his BBC contract, which secured his services until July 2010, was worth an unconfirmed £18m.

But it was expected that Ross would be asked to follow other big stars at the BBC, such as Bruce Forsyth and Chris Moyles, and accept a pay cut.

"Although I have had a wonderful time working for the BBC, and am very proud of the shows I have made while there, over the last two weeks I have decided not to re-negotiate when my current contract comes to an end," he said.

Working at the BBC has been a tremendous privilege, and I would like to thank everyone who has watched and listened so loyally over the last 13 years.

"While there, I have worked with some of the nicest and most talented people in the industry and had the opportunity to interview some of the biggest stars in the world, and am grateful to the BBC for such a marvellous experience.

"I would like to make it perfectly clear that no negotiations ever took place and that my decision is not financially motivated.

    -----------------

    My view:

Very sad news for all his fans, and the ratings don't lie - he has quite a few! The BBC have made it clear they are gonna pander to the minority of serial offendees, so no great surprise.

the guys funny... gotta give him credit for that.
was funny on the big fat quiz too... tis a pity. GL JR.

shame, hes a funny man, his friday night sot had better be replaced with somthing good

Surely his rating's don't compare to yours though Vibeone :whistling:

probably for the best his chat show had become stale after his enforced absence and the glaring hypocrisy he showed while slating a stars films at the start of the week to virtually crawling up their behind by the end of the week was pretty cringeworthy(thanks to ally ross for his weekly updates on that one).

Having said that I suspect graham norton will now be shoehorned into his shoes which will be dire. He hasn't been funny since father ted and his stints covering on radio 2 have been embarrassing.

I'd give chris evans his own show if they really want to replace the chat show.

4 poof's looking for something to do on a Friday night now then.

The comments section is quite funny.

I'm sure he'll do stuff for Channel 4 that he's interested in. His stuff on comic books was really interesting and I'd like to see him do stuff like that.

He could even do stuff online and attract an audience - could really pioneer there.

I actually think it will be for the best in the long run. Don't know who could replace him - either Graham Norton or someone terribly bland like Michael McIntyre.

    First before what?:?

Could even go channel five or itv, as they would put up big bucks to try and get a big brand name.

Sky 1 seem to be snapping most things up lately, bet he goes there.

Those messages left by him and Brand were so funny. Well worth his £6million pounds a year. Without those Sach's wouldn't have been on Coronation St.

Good news, he is as funny as toothache, glad to see the back of him.

He'll be going to C4 - can get away with much more stuff there. Plus, I bet he's jealous of Graham Norton getting all the attention in his new deal.

There's that Ren and Stimpy episode about toothache that is quite funny. Wasn't there a Men Behaving Badly episode that was pretty good too?

Regardless, he was one of the better chat show hosts out there.

it's so good to see you take on board the opinions of others and not being patronising or insisting that yours is the only one that matters! Oh wait.......

£18m? I can do without him then. Will the saving be reflected in next years licence fee?

What would you have liked me to say? The obvious that humour is subjective and whilst that poster may not like him others clearly do?

How wonderfully stale, mediocre and boring that would be. Sorry to disappoint your expectations.

Daily Mail will be convulsing with glee and Rupert Murdoch will be rubbing his hands together as we take another small step towards corporation controlled TV.

He's trying to look 'down wiv da kids' :-D

Show was starting to become stale and the bottom kissing greater. I won't loose sleep!

Says he didn't ask for a raise, truth is he cannot. He kept asking for a waise.

Hope he goes to the US, I cannot stand him, he thinks he's better than the people he has on his show and spends most of the time talking about himself and you end up thinking what did I watch that rubbish for?

Let's have someone that can actually let us enjoy seeing the guests and hearing what they have to say and learning a bit about who they are.

Which interviewer would you say isn't like that in a prime time chat show of this era?

    Father Noel Furlong. Aha.

If the contract runs to July this year why is this quote in the past tense?

Has he finished making programmes for the BBC already & possibly is now making shows for another TV Company (but these cannot be aired until the contract has officially expired)?

Regardless of his popularity you cannot justify paying one person such a high proportion of the public's money... unless you are a City banker, or a Politician, of course.

With regards a replacement, yes, I hope Chris Evans comes back to TV but his brand of entertainment is also better suited to Channel 4.

With Chris Evans' handover from Terry Wogan on the Radio 2 Breakfast show, Terry may be available again for some TV work.

Talking of "brand of entertainment"... the Katy & Russell show may be something not to pursue as a replacement for Jonathan Ross' late night innuendo programme.

That said, you should never pass an opportunity for a photograph of Mr Ross & his two friends...

Don't be silly, it's the BBC.

They'll probably spunk it all on another series of that godawful Horden & Corden sketch show and put Eastenders on 32 times a week.

But you're right - they'll probably waste it on some comedy set in an office in Slough that doesn't even have a laugh track to tell you where to laugh:w00t:
