    VGA to DVI...troubleshooting

I received my VGA to DVI cable today. I plug in the VGA side to the laptop and the DVI side to the monitor, but I get no signal. I also don't get the option in the laptop to switch to monitor, like I normally do when I'm using a VGA cable only.

Anyone know how to work this? Could it be the graphics card of the laptop?

I may be wrong but I think its dvi to vga only and vga to dvi doesnt work.

I think to "switch" the signal to the VGA output you need to press a combination of keys.

On my laptop you had to press Fn + F7 but this may vary between laptops.

Pressing Fn F7 (or whatever F key you use) a few times will "rotate" the output, First to laptop screen, then to external monitor, then to both, then to laptop screen and so on.

See if there is a small image of a monitor on one of your F keys.

Will only work the other way around,

Aw man. First I waste money on a converter..now cable. Good thing I didn't buy VGA to HDMI cable too.

why not just use a VGA cable ?.

Cos I wanna use the xbox vga cable instead. And laptop running on DVI..

DVI is a digital interface, VGA is analogue. A cable alone won't convert it, the cables take the analog from a combined DVI-I (which has both DVI-D(igital) and DVI-A(nalogue) outputs). A converter is more expensive than it would be worth.

What I got is a monitor with VGA,DVI, and HDMI inputs. I want both my laptop (which has vga-out) and xbox 360 (that is not hdmi but vga) to be connected to the monitor. Is there a way maybe to have a piece u can attach to the VGA input, that extends to two more vga inputs, which u can switch between?

You can also search on ebay for a KVM (leyboard video monitor ) switch and just use the VGA part as these are pretty cheap now.
