In the long run it will be cheaper to buy a DVD recorder and hook a VHS player to it. I have a Philips which works great amazon.co.uk/Phi…8-1

There is software you can use on your PC, but I've found it hit and miss as well as time consuming.

PS. If you don't want to fork out on a recorder, I'd be happy to transfer them to DVD. PM me if you would like to do this.

if you record it to HDD forst through a TV card on your PC it wouldnt be a hit and miss I think?
i did this years ago and usually get the result fine

thank you both and thank you predikuesi for the offer but im worried about sending them about, i would be gutted if they got lost in the post, i think i might go down the DVD recorder and route as even my local photo shop sends them elsewhere to be done, too prescious to me to be sent away

    hopefully i'll find a bargain!

i hadnt thought of that, mind you i'd have to buy another vhs as we only have 1 old one left, i might be able to borrow one i guess, im a lil worried that they will snap too, videos of my kids as babies, xmas etc, and they are getting a bit ropey when played, will cost about £40 with post so i need to weigh up the risks i suppose

Have tou tried your local free paper, ours have services like that in it, but local, always worth looking to find someone local, to be honest anyone with their own computer or dvd recorder could do this, i persoanlly would go buy a recorder and do it myself, can you not buy leads to go from vhs recoder to computer

vhs to vhs transfers are notoriously bad for quality loss. Don't you know anyone with a DVD recorder which you could borrow (it would need a scart input socket)?

Buy a DVD recorder from Argos, copy the tapes onto DVD with it then take the recorder back for a refund, you'll have 14 days if I remember correctly

I would also suggest buying good quality DVDRs if you want them to last, Verbatim are the best you'll get on the high street
