VHS Tapes - To Bin Or Not To Bin ? Thoughts, Please...

Found 2nd Dec 2012
I really need to make some space in my cupboards and I have in them loads of VHS tapes (pre-recorded and ones I've made up myself). I know I'll never take them out of the cupboard again let alone play them, so I'm thinking of binning them (It's bin day tomorrow). Our local Charity Shop won't take them anymore, so what should I do ? I feel I should keep them for sentimental reason (and 'cos they used to cost loads...lol) but I need the space. Any thoughts appreciated...

I tend to keep disney films and classics but bin the rest.

Videos are good for young kids as they can change them themselves without doing any damage.

Pull out the tapes and use as an alternative tinsel decoration for your tree.

Depends if it's 80s porn or not. If so, back them up to some other decent media source.

P.S. Wrap the empty cases in xmas paper for fake present decorations or split them open to use them as throw away plates for xmas dinner

I binned loads of them now wish I had kept the AC/dc in concert tape I had recorded off the BBC

No porn...haha

it is such a wast but they have no value no one wants them I still have over 200 must get round to binning them

In the spirit of HUKD why not wrap them up and give them as presents.

They still have their uses. I've a mate who's constantly on the look-out for them just because VHS remains the best tool out there for recording clips off the TV. S'like, a PVR will record all of Jools Holland, even though Lana Del Rey might be the only thing he'd want to keep.

Put an ad up, or just put them in a box in the street a couple of days before bin collection day, with a sign on the box to say what's inside. I know my mate would pick it up. Maybe there are other people who'd do the same.

Freecycle them, if that doesn't work, then bin them

Just have a good check first before bin, got rid of mine to find some of the older pre certs I had were worth a bit

Bin.

On another topic of a similar nature. Should I bin the Playstation 1 (Original) with 20 games or keep them and see if its still worth anything in 20 years time?!

A big THANKS to everyone. You've all made up my mind for me. Just hope there's enough room in my green bin (_;)

Pull the tape out and decorate your xmas tree with the tape reel.

Or wrap the reel around your friends car to wind him up...use all your tapes to do this

Or how many you got? try make a small table or something out of them and put it on ebay lol.

you could donate them to your local hospital thats what we did and the kids watch them in the children's ward as they still have videos players (if you have videos suitable for kids)

I think if you can chuck them in the garage without them getting in the way, then by all means keep. That goes for all old games too. If they're not worth anything, you've got a moisture proof container and room in the garage, then why not I say.

If you like clutter in the house and dusting though, keep them on a shelf.

I sold all my PS2 games and now i wish I'd kept them.
Although with that said, I probably wouldn't bother too much to this day due to new titles and consoles.

If you do wish to get bin them. Keep or maybe sell classics and Disneys, they can be worth a bit.

Before you bin, are you SURE there is nothing on them that might be of worth?

For example, I was astonished to find out the other day that only 12 of the 96 UK broadcast versions of Fraggle Rock exist.

It's always worth checking on Missing Episodes just in case you have something that might be rare, before throwing them away:

Obviously this only really applies to stuff you have taped off-air.

Phone your local women's shelter or hospital and ask if they might want them?

I used to think the same, but sadly... Its time to let go and move on

You could always put them on Freecycle as well - some people out there are looking to have old VHS stuff for their kids.

Went to a certain supermarket recently, parked near the big skips and lo and behold they were brimming with new, sealed vhs tapes. The hoarder in me bagged some choice goodies on impulse.....

Couldn't sell them or give them away to charity. Ended up taking them back to the same store and depositing back in their bins.

Only vhs i keep is bluey's. Can't beat bit of 80's stuff.

Can't beat the hair. And the bush! Love it! Wish i could go back to the 80's.

Just convert them to DVD . Buy a DVD recorder to do this ...........for the pre-recorded ones you need a Macrobuster cable and of course a video player to link to the recorder.

Don't do this, the quality will be VHS standard, and you will pay as much for the recorder as you will just buying a bulk set of dvds. It'll also take a lot of time.

"the quality will be VHS standard," ...............Eh ! of course it would ...what would you expect , DVD quality ?

better than nothing at all .

I've converted lot's of them for people , old wedding videos and some recent ones for someone who ran a boxing gym in the early 80's .Some tapes are ireplaceable and converting them to DVD if they are starting to deteriate makes aload of sence.

so you just though the videos away then ? dont be daft
