Virgin Media Price Increase (Again!) - Free Cancellation if in contract

84
Found 22nd Jul 2015
Hi All,

Just a heads up that Virgin Media are putting the prices of their TV packages up again, this means that since signing a contract approx 8 months ago, they have increased my monthly bill by £4.50 in February and now a further £3 on 1st September.

The good news is that as a result of these increases you are free to leave Virgin even if mid-way through a contract. So if you've been looking at some of the sky offers or even freeview then now is the chance to act and get rid of the money-grabbing ****** and ditch Virgin once and for all.

Anyone wanting to cancel has got until 31st August to give their notice.

I've just called them and told them im not prepared to pay an extra £3 per month for a sports channel I'm not going to use. They've added a £3 per month credit to my account for the next 8 months.
So i'm paying for everyone else to get sports channels, when i don't watch sports at all? Virgin Media are a joke. 2015 and we canlt select and pay for the channels we want to watch rather than bundles which include 3 channels showing the same program thanks to +1 and HD etc. Not only that, paying for line rental when a phone line is rendered practically useless. I am on the most expensive package and all because the kids channels are not included with any of the lower packages. It's a god damned joke.

Bit about the kids channel is so true as my kids are the main tv viewers and its the fact nick and Disney are their favs..
As stated, call and most often then not they will cancel the increase or give credit for X months. It has worked on previous increases and no doubt will work here too.

For me when I was checking best deals for our requirements, VM beats it still with all the increases added up.

I've just told that to their customer services. I'm not prepared to pay for channels that they are forcing on me that I don't watch. They've given me an 8 month credit to my account. Call them up.
THEY DON'T COMPREHEND THAT YOU BUY EXTRA STUFF WITH PROFITS YOU MAKE TO ATTRACT NEW CUSTOMERS.

VM are the worst of the bunch for this. They're telling you CONGRATULATIONS we have bought Sports whatever but by the way your paying for it and for us to be a bigger company!

I totally agree with you I'm sure years ago you were able to pick and choose channels you actually watched I'm the same because I have the kids channels it's so more expensive and the smaller packages don't have any kids programmes or just 1 or 2 at the most

I'm 8 months into an 18 month contract, and i've not yet had a letter about the rise. When i took the contract out i did a fair amount of research in regards to TV and internet packages. Although VM do not require a landline, if you remove it from the package the bill goes up by the same amount the line rental costs. Anyway, their internet speeds are among the best and most stable, and i have only ever had problems with their routers, not so much their services. As soon as i get that letter through i will be jumping ship i think, maybe keeping internet and moving to freesat/freeview.

I've tried to jump ship many times but their BB speeds and reliability always keep my committed. That still doesn't mean they can put my bill up without an argument though.

+1

I always have a moan and threaten to leave and dont think I pay more than I was 5 years ago. Currently pay £29 for line rental & talk weekends calls, tivo HD 1TB and L TV, 50mbps BB

Great company imho. Rather than moaning here, moan direct and see how the price tumbles.
Can I cancel then get my housemate to sign up as a new customer?

Try it. Keep us posted.....
Haha can't run the risk of going without PornHub for a few days!
This only affects XL TV customers not broadband or phone. Virgin have no choice as bt are imposing the extra charges. Virgin are the only company giving people bt sport for free with XL TV even bt don't do it free anymore.

Ditch Virgin TV, keep broadband and get a NowTV box or roku and install the NowTV app which includes Disney & Nickelodeon.
I received a marketing call the other day and they tried to change me to a new contact with more channels with a discount. I told them I watch almost no tv as it is, doesn't matter what channels I have.

Perhaps this was a way to get me to sign up to new terms and the new rate?

Haven't seen a letter yet but will probably get rid of the tv and phone if it's going up again
Try getting BT Sport Europe for £3 with any other provider....you probably won't,

Also, take into account that Virgin Media are the only provider giving all the sports channels and it's not such a bad deal.

If you subscribe to BT Sport already, by adding the Europe channel you pay the extra £3 taking up from £15 to £18, so it's only right that subscribers on the XL tv package pay the extra £3

And to those saying they are being forced to pay for something they won't watch..... How many of the channels on XL package do you genuinely watch already?

Take a look at sky and BT and check out how much their customers are having to pay for the new channel, more than Virgin are charging

£3 is cheaper then the £5 that BT are charging
stuarthanley

It's not free if the price is increasing

I suggest you read his post again....

As he said.... Virgin are the only provider giving BT Sport free, he said nothing about the new BT SPORT EUROPE which as he correctly said that BT are imposing the price rise so Virgin have no option but to pass it on, just like when Sky increase the cost of Sky Sports

It's not rocket science but you will always get moaners.

Do you stop buying fuel when the price goes up? Same goes for vegetables etc.

No as fuel is essential and vegetables can be purchased elsewhere.
If it wasn't for "moaners", the price of everything would increase dramatically.
I'm assuming you'd just lie down and take it with a big smile on your face.
Virgin DO have the option of not passing the £3 on. They don't have to provide the channel. They don't have to provide BT sport for (allegedly) free. There is always another viable option. (As proven when I called them!)

This is incorrect though, BT TV are offering BT Sports for free Even so, I tried to make a comparision yesterday as I am currently with Virgin and been a long standing customer in the past but personally think its ridiculous costs. If you can get Fibre in your home I think BT is coming out miles cheaper to have BT Sport AND Sky Sports than any other providers package.

But is the price rising for everyone? Or just those that choose to receive that channel?
Can you ditch the tv channels but keep the sports package?
Even if Virgin are giving BT Sport for free, i don't and never have watched any sport channel, so why should i have to stump Virgin's bill to BT? If Virgin want to continue offering BT Sport channels then they should be offered as a seperate bundle, similar to the Sky movies bundle, or mke it PPV etc.
Fact is, Virgin's TV bundles are stupid and have needed overhauling for the past 8 years or more. There are channels they offer that are not actually channels, i mean does anyone here actually, honestly watches the God channel? lol
I'm on virgin and have got an android device can I use without internet so it comment but cant find thread u mentioned.thanks
Is there a link to Virgins page stating this. If I phone to cancel, I wanna be able to say that it's stated in such and such place. And not have to pay fees to cancel. Thanks.

Phone and ask if your bill is going up.
Regarding the comments that Virgin are the only ones giving BT Sport free, this is not correct.

BT do give it to their tv customers for free, whether you get faster broadband or not. It depends on whether your exchange is enabled(a multicast area). If you can get faster broadband with BT then you can get an Entertainment Plus package for £10 per month, Sky Sports 1 & 2 for £22 free youview+ box, and free activation.
I rang and got nowhere - they just suggested I change my package down to a lower TV tier
