Virgin Media Superhub 3.0

Was speaking with Virgin Media a few hours ago and asked them why their superhub's WiFi output so sh*t and asked them if there's any new superhub which is a newer version then mine (I have Superhub 2.0, I knew there wasn't no newer version, I just wanted to know if there will be a new one soon), turns out that they have a new Superhub on the way and is currently being tested before release. Hopefully this will fix the rubbish signal strength quality that their previous superhub's used to give out.

Happy days

But the question is how much will they charge you for it? Loyal customers who have been signed up with them for years should get it free.

Oh but wait, we get a 'free' speed upgrade which is always coincidently released alongside a £2 bill increase.

Small rant over.

Yeah I agree with what you're saying, but they don't, but im sure when the new superhub comes out we can always call retention's and threaten to quit if they don't give it to us free

It's already out, has a newer AC wifi chip in it rather than the current N wifi chip.

Got a SH2 afew months ago and been really pleased with it. Get full signal through afew walls at the other side of the house upstairs on the 5GHZ signal.

Is a AC wifi chip better than N then?

The Superhub 3 (officially known as the 'Superhub 2ac') is already out, new Virgin Media broadband customers have got them over the last few weeks. It looks exactly the same as the Superhub 2, except this one has 802.11ac in it.

Do you get the full speed on the 5GHz band? i.e. Say you're on the 152Mbps package for instance, do you get that speed over Wi-Fi through those walls, using Speedtest?

If you were loyal you wouldn't need to be given anything.

Staying with a company because you're either too lazy to change or you're happy with what you're getting doesn't make you "loyal"!

If your devices have AC built into them. Most won't unless they're very new.

I'd just like a router that has wifi range of further than my sofa.

I use the older net gear one as wifi and just turn off wifi on the superhub. Never had a range as good since..

I called them up about my 'free upgrade' was told I need a new digital box for the superhub which costs about a tenner more a month I think, + the latest £2 increase, decided to chuck it in now, just not worth it.

I got a free upgrade to Tivo box last year and a free upgrade to Superhub 2 this year (as well as having my speed increase fast tracked).
And I pay less than new customers for the privilege.
Why?
All part of my annual threaten to cancel retention deal calls.

Yes, but then you could just move to the new package deals they have been advertising for months now and the £2 price increase is wiped out by the £6 saving, along with the fact that I (on my package ) also now upgrade to 152MB broadband plus additional savings on my mobile rate. So, in effect you now with the minimum of effort required on your part have more for less, a price reduction for loyal customers.
I have never had to call retentions with a threat to leave in order to save on my subscription each year.

It hit 156MB, ping of 8ms and 11MB upload.

Edited to add, I use the TP-Link TL-WDN4200 N900 Wireless Dual Band USB Adapter with the PC.

I've heard if you actually put in a cancellation request, you get even better offers than they originally offer you, because they then start calling you after a few days. Just a thought.

No they said there's a new Superhub, not the superhub 2AC. They also said it hasn't been released to the public yet because its still undergoing testing before release, so im guessing its a brand new superhub and not just a model upgrade to the existing superhub.

I'm pretty certain you're wrong, the Superhub 2ac is the 'Superhub 3' as you are referring to. It's only recently been given to new customers, it's already been tested.

If there was a new model in the works, then why would they bother adding 802.11ac to the current one? It doesn't make sense. Read this...

Maybe you could be right, I was only saying that because the Virgin Media CS guy said 'SuperHub 3, instead of Superhub 2AC', so I thought they're making a brand new model. I hope this 2AC model also fixes some bugs (like better WiFi signal) along with their new AC feature

Did that when I got my Tivo box and was paying £24 a month (basic package but cheap)
I always end up with a deal I'm happy with, because if not I just say I'll continue with the cancellation. This year I just couldn't be bothered with the whole cancel and wait for a phonecall dance, so haggled a deal and said I'd go for it if I got a new hub. Hence how I got my Superhub 2.
I remember when I cancelled sky a few years back, they offered me all sorts, at one point 75% off my package at the time, I was tempted keep it and have Virgin as well at the price lol.

I got it. Laptop right beside it but test result says 60 Mbps. In a room near it : 18 Mbps. Thinking about buying another router.

I still haven't got one too. They're giving them out but only to some customers. I asked them if I can have one and they said if the engineer has one in his van when he comes to replace your old hub then you can ask him for it, but its an unlikely chance he'll have one.

There really isn't any difference between the Superhub 2 and the Superhub 2ac, unless the devices in your home are 802.11ac, so you probably won't benefit much anyway.

Like I said before, unless your devices are 802.11ac, then there probably won't be a significant difference. The Superhub 2ac isn't really an amazing router, the ISP routers are never the best out there. If you want an amazing router you have to buy your own one. Or alternatively use an ethernet cable wherever possible. Nevertheless, if you can get a free Superhub 2ac, then of course get one, but don't stress, or worry about it.

Hmm true, will probably get the Asus N66U router or something like that, thanks for the information.

I had an engineer out last week with intermittant timeout issues, and he replaced my SH2 with the newer SH2ac
So if your having issues you may get a newer one that way

Depending on who you speak with, maybe. If not, it's just a dual band N wifi adapter.

Seems quite simple to me if you want a new hub 3.0 and thats to break the old one - ie open it and desolder a capacitor or resistor on the circuit board!

Not that i would ever do something so devious.
