Virgin media throttle speeds again....

Virgin Media will double the number of hours it throttles the bandwidth of customers who hammer its network day and night, changes to its traffic management policy have revealed.

The tightened regime means that between 10am and 3pm subscribers to its "M", "L" and "XL" packages will have their connection throttled for five hours if they download more than their full speed ration.

The decision follows recent regional testing of extended restrictions in London and the North West. Previously the brakes were only slammed on for five hours if limits were exceeded at any point between 4pm and 9pm.

Now, "M" customers who bust 900MB during the day will have their theoretical maximum download halved from 2Mbit/s to 1Mbit/s. "L" and "XL" users' usual headline speeds of 10MBit/s and 20MBit/s will be slowed by three quarters if they break daytime download limits of 2400MB and 6000MB respectively.

The download thresholds for the daytime throttling period are double those of the evening period, which also restricts uploads.
Virgin Media says that at current levels of demand, one per cent of its 3.8 million customers will be affected by the new daytime restrictions. In the evening, when ISP networks are under most strain, traffic limits are aimed at the top five per cent heaviest users.

A spokesman said the new rules are necessary to ensure quality of service for the majority. The move will nevertheless anger some who have been tricked into believing that "unlimited" broadband actually exists by years of crummy marketing by the ISP industry.

The cable monopoly, created by the merger of NTL and Telewest in 2006, is currently working to boost its top speed to 50MBit/s as part of its strategy to put broadband at the centre of its quadruple-play offering. recent trials to ramp Virgin Media's 10Gbit/s backhaul to 40GBit/s in support of the upgrade were successful

Doesnt bother me. I havent managed to get my speeds reduced yet so I doubt this will effect me. Stupid they are capping the 2meg service. You only need download a demo on your games console and suffer the consequences.

Just returned from a week away to find a letter about this.

Not sure if it'll effect me.

Virgin Media

well i guess this is whats happening to me but have never ever had any letters or communications from virgin about it. I phoned them the other week as i noticed at times it was extremely slow and they said they would check and then arranged to send out a new modem. haven't installed it yet but I would have thought on checking my account they would have known if this is what the cause of my problems were or not and could have said to me. So I am still a bit confused.

I get this all the time when I upload/download masses of audio files for recording work. Really can't stand the company anymore. Shouldn't advertise as 'unlimited' as it isn't!

Cheeky beggers. Maybe they should fix my connection first, cant get on facebook, ebay etc and havnt all day

Yup

Do they still advertise it as "unlimited"?

Technically it is unlimited until you are in the top 5% of its customers...

There aren't any caps on the 50mb service at present, so what limit are you meaning? :?

dcx_badass;2223811

No if it has limits then its not unlimited....:whistling:

I'm pretty sure they advertise no download limits, as it doesn't stop you downloading then - although a bit sneaky - they aren't lying to anyone.

Telling you their cable service doesnt suffer the problems of ADSL and gives you the line speed you pay for, sounds like a lie to me if they are going to throttle and stop you from downloading!

No but they are charging you a full amount, when you are getting a greatly reduced service. Surely this practice could be deemed a scam?

450mb limit on my connection.. I can blow that in a matter of hours. Just from a demo on my 360, a couple of online trailers and maybe a few photography websites.
Why are they introducing all these "Super fast" deals, if they don't have the infrastructure to back it all up with?
Its like trying to run when you can't walk.

I know i'm not the only one looking at buying out my virgin contract for others in the market.

It's marketing.
"Super-fast" encourages people to sign up.

Get as many customers as they can, and try and run the business on as little as possible.
Total joke of a company now.

They are becoming a scam,
After all if you hit their limit, and they reduce your speeds, they should reduce your bill accordingly for that period of time.
Especially for ppl like me who have been there years without set limits.

I can understand where you're all coming from when you say its not technically unlimited, but unless your constantly downloading and hamming the bandwidth as if its going out of fashion (which you shouldn't be anyway), then you won't be limited.

Also, when VM are testing the new lines (50 and/or 100mb) they are never limited, they only get limits once they start rolling it out to their customers.

I didn't say I agreed with it, but doesn't change the fact they aren't lying.

A better analogy would be if you went in and could refill your plate as much as you wanted except in peak times when they limited you to one refiill per hour, so you could still eat as much as you liked, just not as quickly as you liked.

Not much fun if it was an all you can eat lunch - and peak times were between 12 and 2!!!
