I want something to use instead of the BT line, I have seen Vonage, but don't really know what it is like

I use Tesco Phone software which pretty dam good. Saved me several hundered pounds by not paying for line rental anymore and its only £3 a month for unlimited landline calls. Can also be configured on some SIP phone software/hardware, and on mobile phones.

Also use Skype for around £20 a year, good for making phone calls but can be iffy sometimes depending on network connection. Cheap and it works too.

I havent subscribed to any "traditional" landline company now for a few years....saved a packet and still got the same use and quality from using VoiP. Also, given that 3 mobile network allow totally free skype-to-skype calls then thats also a bonus as it uses their own data network for excellent quality free calls

I thought you need to pay BT Landline rental regardless of your VOIP provider?

Yes, with Tesco Phone I get a local "landline" number for my area that anybody else can dial.

And also with Skype I get a main city 01 number as well that anyone with a landline or mobile can dial as well.

This is odd, I really want an integrated solution and think if I stay on ADSL I will still be paying BT line rental?

Dont know dude. Last time I used BT the internet wasnt available lol.....sorry, cant help you there, all I know is that with Cable I use my Broadband for my mobile devices, PC Internet connection, xbox360 live and VoiP all for £25 a month

I always found BT to be a bit of a rip off to be honest, thats why I went to Cable.

No line rental, you just pay for the calls and you get a local number as well so nobody knows its a sip number when they ring

Can you not keep your number? Do you use a normal phone or do it through your PC?

You can't use a 'normal' phone on any VOIP service per se unless you buy an ethernet bridge that plugs into your router and your phone. There are usb versions but you need to keep your pc on 24/7 for them or you can just use skype like software to make and recieve calls. Google Grandstream for an example of the 'proper' units. You can't port a number, you just get what they give you. Choose the area you want to be based and they do the rest. Don't like the number just keep signing up till you get one you do like  I use an old hacked v1 BT Homehub with a DECT phone. Only problem is I can't get incoming calls on it, not much of a problem for me as I never want to be bothered by people ringing me anyway

To plug an ordinary phone for voip you'll need an ATA (Analogue Telephony Adapter).

I used sipgate a few years ago but was never impressed with the quality, I presume they have improved?
