Volcanic ash and flights/holiday issues

for all those whose flights and holidays have been affected by this ash cloud, what recourse is there?

im sure its a question on lots of peoples minds!

mine especially as im flying out (supposed to be tomorrow morning!)

is there an automatic right to a total refund or what?

thanks

Depends what you are doing.

package holiday or your own flight booking?

In the Mail today a paragraph caught my attention that may apply to many people

Airlines were yesterday clinging to a smallprint get-out clause in EU law that means they are not liable where cancellation is ' caused by extraordinary circumstances which could not be avoided'

If you have cancellation insurance your ok, if you just bought flights without any insurance you will lose out.

Lots of people are facing no payout even if insured it was saying on the news due to it being an act of god or whatever.

Singapore Airlines were trying to pull that one with me. So far, they have paid out for 2 rooms and two nights at $300 per room (ie $1200) and also a meal package of $90pp pd.

They have however thrown one family out because they were due to take off today. Ive seen the EU stuff mentioned, but I can only asume they have a duty of care because our flight started in Denpasar and wever been dumped in Singapore. They are still trying it with us though (and getting nowhere) but its a painful process. They will certainly be getting a stroppy letter and demand for compensation on my return.

Who'd have thought Singapore air are trying to be Ryan air!

Yeah I don't know what the exact clause is, it's an act of god type thing and people are getting no where fast with their insurance :-(

Yeh, I doubted we'd get anything from the insurance too. That said, we have no outlay. I doubt they can get away with the delay clause though.... which I think for us is 50 quid (damn no pound signs on singapore PC's!) per person per day, up to 2K.......... so we could end up with 2 grand the way things are going!

The hotel we are staying in are actually extremely surprised they are taking this route. Its going to harm their reputation.... Emirates here are doing it right!

Thats what they are trying. They still have a duty of care though and dumping people in the streets with their luggage will do them more harm than good in the long run.

Some companies view get out clauses with relish, others have a little more sympathy.

Agreed. That's why I am surprised Singapore are playing hard ball. That said, we are OK...... but not everybody is. I know most of our 500 passengers on our flight slept in the airport last night!

Singapore Airlines normally so good too. Best airline I've flown with.

As a great man once said........

HA HA!

If package holiday they will give you your money back or an alternative, whether or not you have insurance.

Being discussed on Radio 5 12.00 - 2.00pm (Not sure exactly when)

They were excellent on the way out. My opinion has changed from the return!:w00t: (The Emirates plane stranded..... all passengers were taken straight to a hotel.... but only the noisy ones got a thing from SIA!)

Or might make you into one!!:-D

Hope this ash cloud gets diverted away and everyone eventaully gets home/off safe and sound, preferably with compensation. Guess everyone will have to look hard at their T&C's and be prepared for a tussle.

Im supposed to be going to Florida on the 5th May and im worried it will still be cancelled then.

We bought everything separately. Not worried about car hire 'cos that hasnt been paid for yet, and our tickets are fine for the year. Hotel, we will; lose 1 night's stay.

However, i am a little confused. I bought our flights from Ebookers with Virgin airline. I see Virgin Atlantic are offering customers to rebook cancelled flights to another time free of charge. Would i too be able to do this, or would it only be for people who bought flights direct through Virgin?

im due to go to tenerife thursday but doesnt look too good wth this ash cload worsening on tuesday/wednesday. i didnt book package holiday but travel republc say because of the circumstances the company mght waive or reduce cancellation fee or we can change dates.

my sister is stuck in Spain & my daughters friend was sposed to be back from Florida on friday just gone & they go back to school tommorrow !

I see they are launching inflatable boats to Calais to rescue people :?

]TV presenter Dan Snow bids to rescue stranded tourists

I'm in a similar boat, I was due to fly out Saturday but was informed too late to offer suitable notice to the apartment I was renting, due to their policy we had to pay out £500.
Legally i'm obliged and was relying on the goodwill of the agency, no chance £500 was taken out of my account withing 10 minutes of telling them.

is it not covered by your insurance as this act of god clasuse thing seems ambiguous :?

my old folks are stuck there, they were ment to be back on saturday now not until thursday ,flights still coverd though

apparentley its possible they could be stuck for a few weeks

it is truly a bizzare situation & one i wouldnt want to be in & i hope everyone that is in the situation gets things sorted.

It's weird not hearing the engine roar of jets flying over-head & looking at the flights cancelled & delayed in/out from our local airport (Bournemouth) & Gatwick/Heathrow, obviously the last time was 9/11.
