    Volunteering in Africa

I accept any abuse that comes my way, but anyone who's done it and has any info/recommendations of things to look at/places to consider etc...I would love to hear from you please.

Looking to go at the beginning of 2012 for probably 3 months.

Someone hoping it's true what they say about black men?

I would just say be very aware of the cultural differences. Dont expect to be treated the way you are at home. So you DO need to be much more aware of personal safety in certain situations.

GENIES. I never thought of that. That's even more exciting.

Anyway, I can't be bothered quoting but I'm hoping to teach and why not? Those are my answers.

I'm not interested in justifying what I want to do, where I want to do it and why I want to do it. I'm just looking for other people who may have done something similar and after some information/experience sharing.

Sounds like a great thing to do. What would you be teaching? Can't offer any advice, but good luck.

I would have offered advice as I've volunteered abroad and will be again in Sept but once again people are on the defensive.

And very large needles to inject you with!

I only got as far as Morocco but was travelling around so saw quite a bit. I hadnt really thought much in advance about cultural differences or had dismissed it.
I went on an overland trip and on a couple of stops when the group stopped I found that females alone were harrassed quite badly. ie without a man present

I'm more of the opinion that the most deprived areas within the UK would seem like Paradise compared to some countries/regions of the world. Good luck OP.

Good luck OP - have not volunteered but have spent some time in Africa and the schools will be very grateful for any help you can give them We have always taken school supplies with us and given them to the local schools - but you will need to be careful whilst out there as others have said as the people are so poor that we appear millionaires to them and they can sometimes be overly pushy to the point of harrassment. However if you are volunteering with a reputable company you should be with people who can tell you everything you need to know DD is actually looking at doing this next year too after her post-grad so will keep an eye out for your threads and any advice you come across !

    Thank you.

I don't think I'll find anything useful on here but it was worth a go (err...maybe). Hopefully I'll be in a position to give her a useful insight myself by the time she goes (err...maybe!).

Special thanks to all the morons who have clicked/posted and dismissed what I'd like to do, by the way.

Check out Childreach International. I'm climbing Kilimanjaro for them this Summer, but they also do 'Future Building' where you go out and help build schools etc in Tanzania. If you want to go out and teach I'm sure they'd be happy to help if they can.

I've also had a friend at church go out to Tanzania with 'Go M.A.D'. (MAD = Make A Difference) Could be worth a look.

    Thanks

Friends of mine did about 3 months teaching in Uganda (other went to Kenya) during their gap years through AV ventures.
It's not cheap though, it cost well over £1,000 just to be placed in the school and very basic accommodation (obviously).
If you are the type of person who gets homesick, loves using the internet, creature comforts, are fussy with foods you will not enjoy it as much as others.
The children were very nice and my friends got a lot out of the experience whilst also giving a lot - they helped to build a new classroom and painted it nicely as well as the teaching and bringing things with them like pens, paper, rounders bat and balls, footballs, solar panel shower etc.

EDIT: I had a look at Africa Asia Ventures (the company my friends used) and 3 months would be £3,000 - £4,000! Then flights ontop. My friends didn't pay that so they must have done a shorter stint but spent some of the time travelling. It was well coordinated but still, it does seem a lot of money. I had a look for you and this seems like quite interesting: gapyearforgrownups.co.uk/Uga…ach
