    WANTED: Barebones System for £100ish

Best I seem to come up with:

    novatech.co.uk/nov…427
    + these kb/mouse:

    novatech.co.uk/nov…PSM
    +
    novatech.co.uk/nov…KBL

I have a 250gb hdd that I'm using but could sacrifice for this system, it'll be attached to a 20" LCD and made into a low end vista system for basic web browsing/email/ms office usage, no games/movies.

    Suggestions/opinions welcome etc

Bribary of rep to those helps me most

Yeah not sure what the difference is betwen those two £110 bundles.

    Ta for headsup, edited now.

Not sure if you are aware, but the AMD 3400 CPU in your first barebones box is rather old technology.

It is single core (most newer CPUs are dual core or quad core), and the Sempron brand tends to be for the slower, low end AMD CPUs.

As far as I can see this CPU came out in 2006 which is a long time ago in CPU terms.

Not saying it wont run Vista, but it likely to be rather sluggish (Vista is sluggish at the best of times).

I would try to pay a little more and get a better CPU.

The two £110.35 bundles are listed here

The numbers are BB-A3427 and BB-A342A (on this page the CPUs are shown as different, Sempron 3400 as against Sempron 3200)

If you click on BB-A3427 it has a faster 3400 CPU and a AMD 740G chipset on the motherboard.

If you click on BB-A342A it has a slower 3200 CPU (even though it says 3400 in the title) and a different chipset on the motherboard (AMD 690V + SB600)

A quick look round the web indicates the 740G chipset is newer (and better ) than the 690V chipset.

So of the two the first one with the Sempron 3400 is better (slightly faster CPU and better chipset). Having said that, I would still try to get a better CPU if you can.

While it is £30 more you would be far better buying this barebones bundle.

This has an AMD Athlon X2 4400 Dual core processor.

Have a look at this chart and compare the Sempron 3200 to the Athlon X2 4400

    tomshardware.com/cha…tml

The Sempron 3200 takes about 276 seconds to do a particular job, the Athlon X2 4400 takes about 116 seconds to do the same job, less than half the time.

Considering i'm considering £140 for barebones, I'm wondering if i Should consider a cheap Netbook with vga out (user won't tell difference between DVI and VGA) so in essense they can take their system whereever they want... means no kb/mouse needed and I can keep my 250gb, hmm...

I don't think i said consider enough times...
