I'm considering buying a Sony PSP Slim. Can anyone tell me what firmware versions I should look for to be able to change to custom version for homebrew and backup compatibility.

Some slims aren't "Pandorable", so get one of the earlier slims.

"Pandorable"?
I take it that means they can't be hacked.
Looks like I have a fair bit to learn.

all phat (old) psp's can be hacked, I believe only "slim" psp with a code under 8c can be hacked those that are 8c are most likly unhackable anything else your out of luck. Some 3000's are hackable but its very rare as they must have a certrain motherboard.

Although you can run chick-Hen if ya want, you can on most motherboards...

hope it makes sense gl !

go for a phat if you can lay your hands on a decent one the slims felt too toylike and plastic-y for me anyway and they can be hacked pretty easily i think the cfw is called m33 on my one it updates the same way you do it normally on the update tab havent really used my psp in a while so not as up to date as i used to be

Get the slim one but easier if you avoid 3000 series anything before this can be hacked easily, I bought a pandora battery with magic memory stick from Amazon after I bricked my son's psp. It even inc step by step instructions on how to do it.

Thanks for the advice, really appreciated.
I prefer the feel of the lite version, can you elaborate on how I can identify a pre 8c version. Is the 8c at the end of the serial number?

No, it's in the battery compartment.
It will say "Date Code", then have a number and letter.

Do all psps have a"date code"? I'm sure I noticed one that didn't have anything like that.
