Warranty information for Samsung phone

I'm considering buy the Samsung G600 on o2 from ebay for an agreed price of £130 with the seller. Good feedback ect. Box is sealed.

I'm concerned about the warranty. As I wouldn't have an original receipt what would happen if things do go wrong, will I need a receipt or is it done by serial number?

not sure if this is against T&C (if it is, please mod delete it), but you can get it cheaper from av forums though.

I've heard people talk about the IMEI number showing when the phone was sold and the warranty starting from then so you may only need that. Also all Samsung phones have a 2yr warranty as standard the last time I looked too.

You can ring Samsung up, and give them the IMEI number to get the remaining warranty period. I've done this in the past.
Get the seller to give you the number and do it yourself, it only takes a few mins.

Nope, I think Samsung work it out by Manufactured Date. If you have a invoice, companies usually will extend the period past this if you press them (I know Apple do this, as I had to fax them some documents the other day)
Another example: Hard Drives (they all let you check you warranty status online, but base this figure on the manufactured date).

Ok, the IMEI would be able to tell them when it was made not sold. I … Ok, the IMEI would be able to tell them when it was made not sold. I don't know about samsungs, but SE have year and week it was made on the sticker, so that would work, but then it could be 6 months between it been made and you buying it, so you'll have less warrantee.

Yeah, but the IMEI is on the outside of the box when phones are sold so that might be recorded and could be when the warranty is activated? Could well be wrong, but it would make sense so that you get a full warranty from point of sale.

PS I would also consider getting it from Play or similar as you'll be assured full consumer rights and protection for the sake of £20, plus if you go through Quidco or use a voucher you might make that difference even smaller.

Aah, didn't realise it was such a big difference, up to you really. You could aways unlock it from Orange when you get it, others could advise where best to do that.

o2 do a refurb for £100. Would anyone recommend that?

So:
Ebay £130 but unsure about warranty
O2 New £160
O2 Refurb £100

Response from Samsung:

In response to your email if we had to book your phone in for a repair
and you couldnot provide proof of purchase, then we would use the
serial number to check on the manufacturing date. The phone and the
charger will be covered for 2 years from the manufacturing date and the
battery will be covered for 6 months.

So I guess I'm ok to buy from ebay.
