warranty on second hand xbox 360

basically i want to know where i would stand if i purchased a xbox 360 of ebay. im aware microsoft now offer 3 years warranty but is this only on new consoles? I only ask this question as i dont want to purchase a second hand 360 for it to have the ring of death thanks

would i need the seller to give me a reciept so when i ever contacted microsoft they would replace it

dont quote me on this as im not a 100% but i think they take the manufacture date from the back. date from receipt would be better as it could be longer (if for the general 1 year) but the 360 hasnt even been around 3 years . I cant really think of any need for the receipt other than to prove the obvious fact that you or someone bought it- either way they should be obligated to fix it.. but this is i stress , is what i think is the case
