MKV2VOB takes a couple of minutes to transform a MKV file into a MPEG file,

I used mkvtovob to convert them for the ps3, until i got my revo and now i can play them without conversion

I'd convert to mpg with mkv2vob. For most mkv's, they just transform the files with no converting or anything like that and it takes like a minute....

Will they still be hd if i convert

What if i want to watcch on my xbox

Yes, mkv2vob is a lossless encoder, meaning the quality is the same. I think the XBOX can play it ok, especially if you have XBMC installed.

I have xbmc. I meant the xbox 360 btw! I have both. I am going to convert it taw

If your hard drive is formatted to ntsc, you won't need to bother converting the file as xbmnc will play it.

IMO, you are better putting mkv files on a hard drive that is formatted to NTSC as I said earlier - that way you don't have to convert them at all, just load XBMC and play.

I will put them on my hard drive and try that way thanks

Just make sure it's formatted to NTSC instead of FAT32 otherwise you won't be able to put files bigger than 4GB on it.

Dont you mean NTFS? NTSC is a video format.

lol!
i put it on my hard drive, formatted to nfts, it recognised my hard drive, however it didnt play the film.
then i changed to fat32 and now the hard drive doesnt even appear, however i tried a flash disk just to see if there was something wrong with the ps3 but the ps3
recognised my usb flash disk. I think its my temperamental hard drive

i'm out as too confusing. first off it was an mkv on xbox via HDD, now usb stick (?), mpg file on a ps3 oO

Original Poster

LOL. SORRY.

I want to play an mkv file on a ps3, but i converted to a mpg, it didnt work, then i put it onto a hard drive, but my hard drive was not getting recognised by my ps3. So i tried a usb flash disk to see if theres something wrong with my ps3, it recognised it ok. So i think its either my hard drive or the bluray rip

On a PS3 when you put in a USB thumb drive you have to navigate to it (under video) and press triangle then reveal all to get the list of files. Don't ask me why it requires this.

Original Poster

i did do that. But my usb hard drive was not even getting recognised. when it was on ntfs, it got recognised, when i changed it, it didnt so i will try again later today and let you know how i get on

or just put the files in a folder called VIDEO

I take it you converted to AVI using mkv2vob?

then just copy the file to ps3 from usb stick

The PS3 won't play mkv - use your XBOX.

Original Poster

i converted from mkv to mpg, it didnt work on the ps3, although it started up.
I think its the actual rip, i will try another one later

in regards to playing it on the xbox via xbmc- how when there is no usb support?!
mines the crystal one.
I also put a dual layer disk in the xbox but it just ejected it back out
Edited by: "roadie" 7th Feb 2011

I'm a bit lost on you having no usb support sorry. I use a REVO with XBMC and that allows files to be added from a usb device.

Original Poster

THE XBMC is on my old xbox.
i ended up getting ps3 media server and streaming my bluray rip!
now when i end up getting my speakers will they output 5.1 via streaming?

Original Poster

i ended up using ps3 media server and streamed the mkv.,

now what i wanted to ask, can you stream dts and dts-es and dts-hd ma on ps3 media server?
Thanks guys

dcx_badass

NTSC is a type of TV, NTFS is a hard drive file format, the PS3 cannot … NTSC is a type of TV, NTFS is a hard drive file format, the PS3 cannot read NTFS, you also cannot get XBMC on the PSC (apart from on 3.13 with other OS still).

My error was pointed out earlier in the thread - if you'd bothered to read before jumping in with your usual crap.
