    Website Setup Help...

I'm in the process of designing my first website ever, using Dreamweaver CS3 and its going well however I'm rather confusded about two things:
*how would I go about allow viewers to register on my website and allow then to acess a personal account page?
*my website is going to be a subscription site so what is needed for my webpage to take payments from the registeredd users?
    Thanks in advance

I tried to answer this, but my answer got deleted.

Did you design the site from scratch?

Coding subscriptions, payment options and general security takes a lot of time and careful planning.

Had you considered using an existing CMS (content management system) such as Joomla, Mambo etc?

You won't be able to use dreamweaver to build the site as it needs a scripting language to code it. I would never advise someone to build one by themselves as you are playing with money and personal data. I would look inot hiring a web developer (like myself :p) ansd getting it done professionally. The best bet would be to use an existing cms and customise it.

Send me a pm if you're interested and I will help you as much as I can, e.g give you an idea on what cms to use, what regulations you need to be aware of and incorporating payment methods

what you are looking to do is generally done using php, you can write php in dreamweaver however php requires alot of php/html knowledge.

    option 1
hire someone to do a bespoke site with exactly what you need in it - cost could be anything from £300 to around £700.

    option 2 - Free
use wordpress/Joomla with the plug ins for what you need, and only use paypal as then you are not responsible for the payment details being secure.

    option 3
use a ready made product that is designed for the things you offer (forums subscription, magazine subscription) which can be any amount of money.

I would suggest going down the wordpress route as the cost will be very little if any.
If you feel that paying someone is a good investment to get what you want, then that is the best option.

If you pm me with the type of site e.g, forum etc and I will be able to give a better price, as a "subscription based site" is a little vague,

unless I've missed summit, he's not asking for money - just offering advice via PM as the OP may not wanna disclose further details in the forum:thumbsup:

EDIT: he said "i'll give you a price" - not sure if thats "his" price, or a price in gerneral the OP would expect to pay from someone LIKE himself. Obviously go professional and you expect/will pay much more :whistling:

I know this is picky, but its borderline and I only picked up on it as so many others have been rapped on the knuckles for less. Maybe its just me and I agree with your first comments. I think its because it says "a better price" rather than costs which is more general - down to semantics !?

Okay well my website planning has come to a near halt now, is it possible for me to design my websie and then just have someone/another web designer encorporate the subcription and payment coding into my website? And is php for subcription and payment? Or payment some other sort of code? ...thanks

I think the best bet is for you to design the site the way you want it to look - use existing sites that you like and try and mock up a picture/layout - even if they are just sketches and notes. Then either try and find a web developer for quotes or if you want to learn and feel confident, look at using something like Joomla and using a template club (Joomlart, Rockettheme, GavickPro, Yootheme etc) which costs very little and is pretty easy to get started with.

Joomla is basically a framework which offers a vast of modules and add-ons all of which can handle subscriptions etc.

Make a list of how you want your site to work, try and make a timeline plan so that you dont try to do everything at once.

If you want any more guidance please feel free to PM me.

Wait....you bought Dreamweaver but don't know how to code???

Wouldn't it have been more sensible to get an open source piece of software first and learn for free?
