    Weird Ingredients in food.

A friend of mine was eating a bag of Bassetts Jelly Babies and when I looked on the back of the pack one of the ingredients was..

    ...Spinach (omg, lmao)

I mean spinach in sweets, lol.

Feel free to list any other weird ingredients you can find.

I like that programme when I catch it.... I can't bear to see cruelty to animals though... I'm the type of person who walks past the butchers looking the other way and trying not to breathe lol

If I had to hunt for meat we'd all be vegetarians lol

just watched that. pretty interesting actually

Why do they still allow products to say "Made / Produced in the UK" yet none of the ingredients are british?

e.g. Birds Eyes The Great British Menu roast chicken & vegetables. Veg from ROI and chicken from thailand.

Wouldnt ever want to eat any food from thailand after watching "blood, sweat & takeaways"! :w00t: Grim in the extreme.

I even have to look away from the TV when they show pigs, cows etc.

I'm such a hypocrite as I love my smoked bacon & egg sarnies on thick hovis granary (free range of course ;-)).

Are there any specific things to avoid in food which are carefully concealed?

I know to avoid at all costs:-

    aspartame - carcinogenic

    MRM - slurry from carcasses

    MSG - Mono-sodium glutomate

MGS4 - just dont like the game at all :-D

    Dont eat takeaways then?

BBC programme last night said a lot of chicken used in takeaways has up to 35% added water which is mixed with beef and pork fat so it doesnt leech out! :w00t:

More worryingly, the pork and beef fat has had its DNA removed so that it cant be detected by the food safety inspectors!

Think I'll stick to making my own currys :-D

Why are MSG and aspartame so bad? They are two of the most studied foodstuffs out there; I'd be more worried about plenty of other things that are included in food and don't have the number of studies done on them worldwide (pesticides and herbicides for one!). Besides, its pretty hard to avoid either in the real world, especially if you ever want to eat away from home...

Odd sound foods? Ash in cat-food

The fact that aspartame was originally banned in the USA and only approved after intervention by Donald Rumsfeld is enough to put me off the stuff ;-)

MSG is just bad full stop

Aspartame is deadly stuff hon, don't know so much information about MSG but I do have a sensitive stomach and can't eat a chinese take away due to the MSG, so it's doing summin... not sure what, I'd have to look it up...

Totally right, they shouldnt be putting herbicides, pesticides etc on/in our foods or messing with genetic modifications either x x

another warning from that programme was that a lot of organic fruit and veg was being washed with Citrox before packaging and they found it contained anti-freeze!

    Doesn't mean it's bad necessarily.

Paracetamol is banned in the US as well, yet widely used over here.

I take it you don't eat Chinese Takeaways then, as they all contain MSG.

MSG ain't as bad as you think really - the main issue with it is the sodium it contains - much like consuming too much salt. The saturated fats in Indian foods is probably worse for you really.

Regards the anti-freeze issue with that product - it stated in the programme that the manufacturers were contacted and stated that there was accidental contamination within the product as one of their suppliers had introduced it. They withdrew the product that was contaminated.

with respect, they would say that.

generally cook my own indian as can get it really close to takeaway standard

this book gives the secret away

as close to a takeaway as you can get without piling in the ghee, waterlogged chicken and a tonne of salt

be prepared for a smelly kitchen for days though! :w00t:

    amazon.co.uk/Cur…8-1

works out to be about £2 per curry portion (and thats with free range breast!).
