    Weird oil question........

When oil is taken from the ground, What is put in its place?, Nothing?

I mean when they extract 1000's of gallons of oil every day, What stops the ground crumbling and falling into that huge hole thats been left?

What supports the ground basically, Thin air? :?

good question erm some pressure of some kind i guess?

The ground is drilled into with a special drill sort of type thing. The oil is then collected through a pipe in that drill I think.

Don't think anything is needed to support the ground because of water filling it?

Not sure. Strange thing to ask.

Well my first (rather rubbish) theory was it creates a vacuum which keeps it in place, But then thats not possible as they wouldn't be able to get the oil out! :giggle:

Its a possibility as oil rises to the top when placed in water, So they're separated and wouldn't be contaminated. But then where does the extra water come from?, If it needs to fill the gap it needs more water from where that water has come from (if that makes sense.), Sea levels are also rising, But yet oil is at its highest demand?

maybe they fill it back up with jelly?

No they don't, I eat all the jelly hence why I wobble.

Ummm. I know its something to do with the concentration. Its like another layer on a cake, you have the sponge, jam and icing. But the water fills the gap, if you put a hole in your bath (dont) it'll fill the hole/flood your house.

    put hole in bath check
    turn on water check
now wait for house to flood and if it doesnt your theory is wrong

    Clear as mud to me

Unless I read that wrong, Thats the mud they've digged out when searching for the oil.

Because if its mud they replaced it with, Where are they getting the mud from?

Even so, Where does the water come from?

Sea levels are at an all time high, Also if the water could go down, Why doesn't the oil come up (As it separates and rises to the top?)

That theory holds no water i'm afraid.

The oil in such formation is usually under such great pressure that it … The oil in such formation is usually under such great pressure that it flows naturally, and sometimes with great force, from the well. However, in some cases this pressure later diminishes so that the oil must be pumped from the well. Natural gas or water is sometimes pumped into the well to replace the oil that is withdrawn. This is called "repressurizing" the oil well.

Its something I asked a school years ago and Never did get a proper answer, Kept the teacher quite for a good 5 minutes before he said "I'll do some research", He never did!! :giggle:

yay was right it was pressure of some kind!

I failed GCSE chemistry I can't help I'm afraid. But I do know that oil has either a lower or higher concentration which causes it to rise to the top. Oil won't rise out easily because its burried deep in the ground and is a very thick substance.

Its good, But even so, Where would they get the millions of gallons of water from?

Obviously the gas is natural and that could work with the "creates a vacuum" theory though.

Theres a load of bs for you. Basically, you go to the shop and buy it.

    Has got me curious though.

I also failed GCSE Science, lol!

Oil is high density and as such when water is present would rise to the top.

did you do single, double or triple?

Obviously you're all wrong. The great minds of the ever growing mole people population keep the world from collapse. You see when you take oil from the ground, the mole people expand their civilisation. Using support beams and mud they create a miniature utopia under the ground.

    So there.

I'm, doing double at the mo, i think triple would have done my head in lol

i found science one of the easier subjects because you just memorise the book, no figuring stuff out like in maths! apart from the phisics side of it

I like the theory, But where do the mole people get the support beams and mud from?, As the hole they create would be needed to be filled by something else?

Anyway, This should give people a nice little headache just when they are going to sleep!, Don't think to much, Its dangerous! :giggle:
