Why would you buy a house on a treacherous hill? That's just asking for trouble.

i dont know if there is any grit as last time we were iced in for 3 days and next door fell on the stairs and she is quite old so trying to avoid it this time by gritting as she doesnt like to ask for help we live on an incline with stairs all over the estate and lots of elderly and no grit boxes

Just go for it. its not like you are stealing it so what could anyone say... Do your good deed!

My dad does that for our neighbour too

OP, my advice would be to grit your teeth and go for it

about 5 inches of snow here, theres about 3 inches clinging to the washing line, took me 30 mins to dig myself out of the drive at 5am this morning, then i got stuck at the end of the road, I come back home, no work for me today.

There was an article in my local paper last week, express and star, about the council reporting a guy to the police for removeing grit from one of these boxes, so def not legal around here

Our's not been refilled for about 2 years

As stated thats what they are there for. However, HUKD has a higher percentage of idiots than normal life, so although I'm not suggesting you are one of them, I'd ask you not to steal it all in order to grit your patio etc

schools closed limited bus service on about closing the bridge for gritting just gets better

It was a nightmare trying to find some grit the other day.

Drove round checking all the grit boxes and passed a church where the gritters had dumped a couple of shovelfuls outside (probably for funerals) and five minutes later as I passed it again someone had stolen it.

didn't know this ^^^ they put one AT THE BOTTOM my (steep) road so before the twits tipped it over like they usually do I did a couple of journey's with a bucket in order to be able to grit steps and paths at the top of the road, the excess is in a little pile on the drive, brb off to buy tarpaulin

The one near me clearly states - grit is available for the public highway only and not personal use, ie drives or garden paths

I may have to delete my post in case the grit police are about :?

Pavements/Walkways and roads are the public highway though, so you can use it. As long as it is not used on your own property it will be fine.
Not sure why so many of you are bothered though, do you even go outdoors? - you're always on here*

Usually in very hilly or remote areas...

EDIT: Having said that, a good alternative is not to go out...

    just take it

or a few kettles of hot water, brush the water down the stairs

And then the water freezes at the bottom. Essentially you are leading the old folk into a false sense of security with clear steps, and then WHAM! new hip time.
