What's the story?

Michael Carroll (born 29 March 1983), born in Swaffham, Norfolk, UK, is a former binman who won £9.7 million on the National Lottery in November 2002, aged 19. His biography written by Sean Boru, entitled Careful What You Wish For (ISBN 1-844-54313-7), was published by John Blake Publishing in October 2006.

As a multi-millionaire, the self-proclaimed "Chavvy McChavChav," known by the press as the "Lotto Lout", immediately bought four homes, a holiday villa in Spain, two convertible BMWs along with two Mercedes-Benz cars and several quad bikes. Sources close to him claim that Carroll, who wears a large amount of gold jewellery and has been in constant trouble with the law for using drugs and committing other crimes, has spent "untold thousands" on substance abuse.

In 2005, Carroll participated in a celebrity boxing match where he was apparently defeated by Mark Smith, formerly a star of TV show Gladiators under the name Rhino, but the fight was officially declared a draw by the judges.

Also in 2006, he was the subject of the documentary Michael Carroll: King of Chavs.

Carroll proudly sports a tattoo of the Northern Irish paramilitary organisation Ulster Defence Association and, as a fan of Rangers FC, invested up to a million pounds of his winnings in Rangers Financial Management, from whom the football club receive a share of profits on the financial services they sell.

He is currently estranged from his wife Sandra Aiken and daughter Brooke and has had a child with hairdresser girlfriend Gemma Peake.

In February 2006, he was jailed for nine months for affray.

Carroll had reportedly spent almost his entire fortune within 18 months on extravagant houses, cars for demolition derby races in his back garden, and gold jewellery. Later convicted of cocaine possession, it was claimed he has only £500,000 left.

In 2004, he was banned from driving for six months after being caught at the wheel of his new £49,000 BMW without L-plates and insurance.

Shortly after being released from prison at the end of June 2006, Carroll took out a loan in order to keep his houses and maintain his "party lifestyle". The BBC has reported that he is almost broke, having spent his fortune on new homes, drugs, parties, jewellery and cars.

In August 2006, Carroll denied rumours that he was broke.

However as of February 2010, he revealed that he was back on the dole having spent all of his money on crack cocaine, gambling, his family and friends, electronic goods, cars, prostitutes and gold.

On 18th February 2010, he was declared bankrupt, with his ruined mansion being put up for sale.

No, there's more to it than that. He actually IS a worthless, violent chav. This has been well documented.

Anyone who has watched or read any form of news over the past 5 or so years knows how bad he is and what a disgrace he's been

Damn I would've used the money carefully!

iNSOMINIAC is he your brother or something? Instead of just disagreeing like a 5 year old stubborn kid. How about giving some facts about why he isn't soo bad after all?

It's a lottery.

But I do ove it when people who work hard in their rubbish 9-5 jobs begrudge a person from winning it and laugh as he falls into 'despair'.

Most responses are 'waaaaaahhhhh why couldn't it be me - it's so unfair!'

You'd probably have to have read something like the Mail or The Sun to really get a proper dose of middle-class/upper-working class outrage at this.

It's along the lines of those bankers bonus stories or the MP expenses stories - basically, anything where somebody is getting something the reader isn't and they can feel all indignant about it.

I've never wasted my money on doing the lottery and certainly don't begrudge anyone that scoops the jackpot to live the dream. This guy was obnoxious and a complete nightmare to his neighbours with the drug fueled violent benders he went on. I can see why you'd look up and aspire to be him.
