    ^^ this

    ]Comodo Antivirus and Firewall

Totally free and very effective, been using it on all my Pc's for the past 2 years at least.

Latest version has a Sandbox so any new apps installed can be fully checked out before they run riot in your system.

    avira antivirus(google it)..i'm using the free version and it's great...no problems with it,it doesn't use that many resources..i'm using win7 64 bit version...100% recommend

    Nod32

Avast along with Comodo Firewall (no add-ons). Keeps my Windows 7 system running smoothly. Haven't scanned with any anti-spyware software for a while but I use Adaware for that usually.

If you got a 3 mobile dongle either Zte or Huawei then do not use avg9 your system will lock up randomly(every laptop I have does this) have had to fix plenty of others that have done this also and told many others that were experiencing this to remove avg with removal tool (some ignored me and their system kept crashing until someone else did exactly what I had told them to do) and fixed their laptop.

Other than that Avg is OK (it will let some viruses through or rather not detect them but so will any other anti virus as there is nothing that can stop everything)

Microsoft security essentials does not stop the likes of security tool (v/malware) from infecting your system.

Whichever program you use just make sure to keep it updated everyday.

Used many before but sticking to this now

    Avira + Malwarebytes + SpybotS&D + HiJackThis

    That combination is unbeatable.

I'm currently using Microsoft Security Essentials as it's efficient and unobtrusive (unlike what AVG has become) and so far been doing a good job of eliminating any malware that's been connected to it.

    +1:thumbsup:

last 3 years I've gone from Bit Defender to PC Cillin (now Trend Micro) to Nod 32 to Eset's full Security, to Norton 2010.

Norton and Eset are my recommendations.

Microsoft if you can't afford to pay for one.

will never EVER touch AVG free (after spending years in a PC shop cleaning up computers with this kack on) unless it drastically changes

having said that I never thought Id be running Norton on my home system after it was such a bad bloated product.
but since I keep an open mind (like ALL IT Pro's should whether employed, self employed or otherwise!), I saw a massive change in Norton and it really surprised me how good it is now.

try a quick trip to shields up and PC flank to see how vulnerable your computer might be.
maybe do an online scan at the likes of trend housecall

Trouble with those (files) is they might already be hacked. (depending on source) I mean from dubious sources .

Or at least any problems you know of - a lot of malware is now designed to run as silently as possible so it's not spotted and removed. I've heard people tell me this fairly often (including supposed IT Pro's) and their supposed virus-free PC has infected their USB memory drive or similar which has been flagged up straight away on my own machines. Given there are decent free AV programs there's not much reason to run without AV.
