What are your pet hates, speech-wise?

There are things that some people say which are the verbal equivalent of fingernails vs blackboard.

One of mine is those who can't say the plural of "text", instead saying "texes".

    What does it for you?????

Ha, I could go on for ever!
    Brought and bought.
    There, their and they're.
    Advise, advice.

Just realised actually, those are mostly written, but for verbal, brought and bought and pacific instead of specific!

    'of' and 'have'

    calling an mp3 player an mp3 ?!?

ah, but that's the written word, i meant spoken word. such as "us went there" instead of "we"

When people pronounce "something" as "someTHINK"

would of instead of would have
should of instead of should have

and the king of all not using WAS and WERE properly, my OH does this and it winds me up cos im worried i'll end up picking up his bad habits

    Innit doe!!!
    Well bad!
    tuuuurah!
(talking with false / improvised accents - either trying to be Chavvy or trying to be posh)

you should come to Glasgow sometime if you want to hear english spoken properly:whistling:

    Pasghetti instead of spaghetti

    Crimbo - Christmas
    Tommy k - ketchup
    Deccies - decorations
    Of - have
    Somethink - something
    Evrrythink - everything
    Leccie - electricity

    Probably loads more too!

white people who speak like they are black! these are the worst offenders in the world!

idiots who use words like "brah" because they think its cool, but cant see how stupid it is because the people they hang around with are equally stupid.

and dont get me started on "chillaxing"

    Mataland - really bugs me!

Oh and my son says askED instead of asked but he is only 5 so let him off.

when people say "can I lend this off you?" WTF! Its borrow! winds me up so much.

Also in lichfield lots of people say tooth pronounced "tuth"... speak properly people!

Mine is when black people say axe or axed instead of ask or asked

    to be fair
    to be honest

my bad - especially when said by 40 something fathers who think they are still hip and cool and trendy

"babby" instead of BABY and people that say "AN historic"

    "arcs" :thumbsup:

    "I didn't see nothing"
    "I don't have nothing"
"I ain't got nothing"... and so on.

    Confusion between 'that' & 'which'.

    "Awesome!"

A lack of manners in general.

    Thats exactly what I mean!!
I can cope with people writing lol, it's when they actually say it that drives me nuts!

My Dad also winds me up, you're giving him a phone number for customer services, and he says
How do you spell customer? c-o?
    C-U
    C-O-C-U
**thinks to self, FFS ** No, C-U

Even with small simple words he has to ask how to spell it.
