What breed medium sized dog for family with a 6 year old??

We are thinking of getting a dog. A medium sized one would be best, but not sure what breed to get.

We have a 6 year old daughter who loves dogs.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Cocker Spaniel, although if your not sure what breed then I dont think you've thought about it enough or done enough research

take your daughter to local pound or dog rescue and let her chose...
she can spend some time with it there -
go by the dogs temperament rather than the breed

Im staying well out of this thread X)

I would personally say a staffy aka nanny dogs, ignore the bad press drug dealers and thugs give them they are fantastic family pets, its only mistreatment makes them turn (and sometimes inbreeding).

We had an Alsatian x Lab and he was fantastic, he used to let our little one pull himself up using him when he learnt to walk, it wasnt a matter of being in the right place either if he saw the little one trying to stand he used to actually go and stand by him to help him.

Other alternatives I can think of are Mastweilers but they are large, the only reason I looked this breed up was because our pups dad is one (mind you at six months our pup is almost 26KG and he also has border and Alsatian which are smaller than the dad. In fact his dad his looking for an home, he is two years old.

I see your Border and raise you an over grown version (well 1/4 border anyway)

These was taken at 5 months, beware with borders if you value your garden they love digging! Not too bad with a normal border but when his paws are the size of my palms its not so good!

    He is
    Dad = Mastweiler (Bull-mastiff x Rottweiler)

Mum = Alsatian x Border Terrier

    WTF is an anckle?

Not all terriers are that bad, its more the toy breeds.

Dont forget staffs are also a terrier but they are far from yappy ankle biters

Storm is vocal when he wants to be but far from yappy! More of a roaring deafness.

They are meant to flop but sometimes they dont. Dont ask me why but it tends to be the wire hair ones that stick up but yours isnt! Strange.

yeah the wire hair ones have smaller ears thou, i love it when she shakes her head coz they flap about and make a funny noise

We're considering a puppy. We need an anti-allergy dog though so are going to investigate Labradoodles. Our youngest is 5 years old and from the research we've done they are great with children and very safe. No way are we allowing any kind of potentially dangerous dog into our house! It is a lot to do with the training though aswell.

If going for a labradoodle you ideally want a F1 they carry more of the traits you want,

I have done some research, and to be honest I was thinking of either a cocker spaniel or border terrier but wanted to see what other people said.
While doing research some sites differed in opinion to others.

It was a typo, I'm sure you knew what I meant
Ok, maybe I spoke a little broadly. I just can't stand them little yappy ones. (the ones that don't stop barking and run away barking if you move towards them)

I do actually like most dogs though

I recommend lhaso apso aswel, my two are great with children, even when carried around by neck or front paws (mum used to childmind) and the dont shed anywear near as much as some dogs, they love cuddles to

galareho, apso's are recommended for allergy sufferers for those who want a smaller breed, if kept trimmed, they only shed about the same amount of hair as a human, and their coat is more like hair than fur. just thought id mention it, mum got our first because my brother wheezed around pets because of the fur, and apso's were recommended

Miniature schnauzer. Ours is 10 months old and is great with our two kids, aged 1 and 3. Non shedding as well so good for allergy sufferers.

I agree with Willdev, a cavalier king Charles spaniel. My avatar is my dog hermione, she's great with kids of all ages!

lab any day of the week.

If you have child(ren) I would go the puppy route personally....going to a rescue centre you don't know what you are getting and it's quite risky.

Labradoodles if you have allergy issues otherwise a labrador or a retriever is what I would recommend....we have 3 children and have a yellow lab - I trust him implicitly....went for quietest in litter and at almost 11 he has been just wonderful and still is just the most gentle soul ever!

Here's George Pawge snuggling into one of my kids a few days after a major op to remove a tumour (hence his very fashionable T-shirt)
