What do people think of this laptop?

Found 29th Aug 2009
Hi

Looking for a laptop for my Dad, he wants something ideally with a large screen for mainly surfing and occasionally watching movies. He won't be gaming on it at all or doing much processing, other than storing and viewing photos!

This looks like a decent machine for what he wants - what do you think? comet.co.uk/sho…ion

emachines tend to make cheap and cheerful laptops priced at the low end of the marketplace.

To get a 17" laptop for just over £300 is pretty good, and as it is not expected to be used for any heavy computing work the computing power does not matter too much.

The CPU is OK, 2Gb of memory is OK, 160Gb of hard disk is OK (for the price you cannot expect much more).

I notice it has not got S-video output or HDMI output, and I believe these can be used to connect a laptop direct to a TV, so if he hopes to do that he wont be able to. If he only wants to watch movies on the laptop it will be fine (however if he wants to connect it to a TV later he wont be able to).

Also note it has Vista Home Basic and it may be difficult to upgrade to Windows 7 at a later date as the upgrade freom Home Basic is not clear. It is generally better to go for a Vista Home Premium laptop (but that may be more expensive)

I notice Laskys have it for £299:

Thanku very much for your help. He does just want it for web and watching dvds on this - his current tv won't take a hdmi connection anyway, and i dont think he'd use it....with regards to windows 7 - is it that he can upgrade its just that he'll have to pay? or is it that the laptop wont take it?

It is just that in Windows 7 Microsoft have removed the Home Basic version (in the UK anyway).

So the upgrade path from Home Basic to Windows 7 is not clear.

He would have to pay for the upgrade anyway, so I would just forget about Windows 7.

thanks guilbert. does that matter? isnt he ok with vista or should this put him off?

You might be better off waiting for a lappy with win7 already on it... vista CAN be sluggish, and also then you haven't got to worry about upgrading it as it'll have the latest windows OS on it anyway.
If you do decide to go with that one, then make sure you make a backup disc for your dad.. that way if you do decide to try another OS like ubuntu (my personal preference) then you can always re-install vista if you decide you don't like it after all.. hope that helps

While Windows 7 is getting some good reviews (before it comes out) Vista is not the awful product that the bad press would make you believe.

One of our family PCs is Vista and the 4 members of my famly use it and are quite happy with it.

im in work so I cant look for you, but check out argos. They have some nice large screen lappys. Look at the samsung ones, they are superb for the money,

basically a hp. Nice one, I forgot to say, I would leave comet well alone to be honest, if there is an issue with your machine you are referred to the manufacturer, if something goes wrong and you have it from currys, they use their in house tech guys service, while not perfect, they are better than some overseas callcenter!
