What do you say when your young child asks you if Santa is real?!?!

I didn't say that! Of course Santa is, er....

i skirt round the question without giving an actual answer, throw back questions to put them off, such as

    why do you ask that?
when i was little who brought all my prezzies?
who do you think makes all the toys?

none of these give an actual answer and none have an answer that is totally right but whils they are busy thinking of an answer you go do something else

In any other situation santa would be lynched by a mob of parents for being a strange paedo.

Maybe you should just tell your child no? Depends how old they are I guess

    Of course he's real!

He's real as long as people believe in him! (Or didn't you read Terry Pratchet's "Hogfather"?)

The eldest kid of a chum of mine was expressing doubts about Santa being real. Said I'd fix it: I asked her what presents the kiddie was getting and on Cristmas morning I rang her as Santa and asked for the kiddie. Asked him whether he was pleased with the guitar and bike, 'cos "Santa likes to call a few special children to make sure everything is OK."

That fixed it perfectly. Apparently said Kiddie came off phone with wide eyes: "...It must have been Santa - he knew exactly what I'd had!"

Best phone call I've ever made.

I hate Santa though! He gets all the credit! I feel like screaming 'do you know how hard mummy and daddy have worked to get all this-never mind thanking Santa!!!

If Santa is so great then why does he give crap presents to poor families and the latest expensive games consoles to kids in rich families. I quickly came to the conclusion Santa did not exist.

Why lie to kids?! Tell them it as it is like you'll have to do when they get older to give the "sex" talk.

hi,i told mine if you dont believe! you wont receive!,try that one good luck

Santa to Religion.. all made up!

I do believe in ghost's and UFO's, and other life! (We can't be the only ones!)

It is a fully loaded question! A rock and a hard place... Does a good parent tell the truth and break his childs heart/ destroy the innocence of Christmas or does he lie through his teeth to his child (that you've been trying to teach since an early age the lying is bad)? Ummm.

Ghosts do not exist, if you have seen one it was a hallucination which more than likely happened due to sleep deprivation, illness,or some sort of substance misuse. There is no such thing as a soul. Once you die and brain death has occurred all that made you you has gone as it is purely a mass of connecting fibres and electrical signals in the brain.

UFO's are more than likely man-made objects. The likely distance of any species sufficiently intelligent to travel large distances in space, and the energy requirements to travel such distances mean it is highly improbable UFOs are manned by such extraterrestrial intelligence. Plus why would they come to see us? We're probably the most pathetic species in the cosmos, all greedy and interested in money with a great lack of equality in society. Plus it is more likely aliens would have the sense to only visit other space-faring species with technological capabilities similar to their own. We just have not developed anywhere near that far yet, and by the time that could happen humans as a species will probably be extinct and superseded by a far more superior species. Is it any surprise there were next to no UFO reports before movies depicting them were shown?!

Interesting point - but you say the 'innocence' of Christmas. Surely there is a valid line of thought that says lying to children, whatever the reasons, is the opposite of innocence in that regard.

Just an observation but whole question (and the replies), are also relevant to whether we believe god exists.

I don't believe in God and get annoyed when people want thank god after they have survived some horrible event......instead of thanking the real people whose skill got them through it.

Yes faith is important to a lot of people (not me) and I did go along with the Santa thing, until they started asking questions. At that stage, I told them the truth. If they are asking the question, they already suspect it is not true.

I am sure many of us can remember the dawning moment being told by mates in school that Santa was not real. Same also applies to sex. If your kids are asking, and you lie..........how do expect them to ever take seriously anything you say again.

That is not to say you have to be blunt and tell kids it's all nonsense. At this time of year, kids live in a fantasy world. No matter what age, if they are asking that question, they are ready to know the truth.

Santa doesn't get all the credit in this house, he only brings the little things for the stockings, the big presents are from mummy

This is where we are teaching our kids its o.k to lie to make somebody happy... which is fine when you are doing it for good reasons i.e. bringing hearts together
What we are doing here is Indoctrinating the child to love an imaginary character who will benefit them materialsticly
The materialistic greed is implanted deep into thier little hearts and minds, inturn making them adopt a bad character i.e. someone who shows love to people to gain what they want (materialisticly).
IMO= Making them worse than us when they grow up... and therefore creating a means to an end.
Humanity as we know it is becoming sucked up into a wormwhole that will then lead to a breakdown in society!!
Humanitarism is bieng removed from the roots of mankind through these never ending worthless rituals.

    Christmas Facts
The religious festival is originally a blend of pagan customs. The Romans held a festival on December 25 called Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, i.e. "the birthday of the unconquered sun.". Pagan Scandinavia celebrated a winter festival called Yule, held in late December to early January. However, it is uncertain exactly why December 25 became associated with the birth of Jesus since the Old Testament doesn’t mention a specific date of the event.

I'm not attacking Christmas but there are many controversial rituals that take place around the world that are be causing a problems on the long run, number 1 on the list has got to be X-mas.

When mine were small, they got one present that they really wanted off Santa and presents of mum and dad.
They believed till they were about 9 years old.
Even now, with children of their own, they do the same. It's nice to keep the magic alive.

I always got loads of little presents from Santa and the main stuff from mum and dad. One Christmas Santa sent me a email with clip art pictures of himself. This happened to coincide with my dad buying himself the family first pc!!! That kinda gave it away.

I was 9 by the way

santa is well real, i saw the man himself last year at his post office in lapland, i believe!!!!!!

my little un says when he sees one at the shopping centre etc, that its santas helpers cause he has seen the real one at his house at the north pole!!! cute aint he?

I lie through my teeth no harm in keeping the magic alive. Im sure there's plenty of other little lies parents tell their kids all the time to make them feel better about things withour even realising it.
