    Simple answer
If you don't know what it does, you don't need it and don't do it

Wow, I must be good, I found this using … Wow, I must be good, I found this using googlehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOS_jailbreaking

OP clearly wanted more tailored advice rather than a wikipedia entry.

Are you planning to goto jail then?

hey deeky if i was quoting a funny then i would have done a face like this but i was asking a serious question

I wouldn't recommend on any phone you wouldn't want to risk bricking; it's not worth it.

As I understand it op - it removes the restrictions that Apple has put in place on your device, allowing you to do much more in the way of customisation etc. It also means you are able to install software from places other than Apple's app store - something you can't do on a non-jailbroken phone.

Ps I have no idea how you do it.

    breaks warranty...nough said

Does it really break warranty? Can't you just use iTunes to flash your device back to latest stock OS

shows up on the devices flash id and ....who wants too fight for a warranty

if you jailbreak it and it breaks you walk into apple with any faults its a big no

and say you flash it and it doesnt connect to itunes or charge your not goin to be able to flash it back to stock and .......

    if you are doin it
please be careful . my son done it . told me it would be OK . two days later checked my bank . £100 lighter as my card was still getting charged for everything he that he was getting for free .

jailbreaking is worth doing and is quite simple.

the only issue is that when apple release a new ios version you have to wait and not upgrade until there is a new jailbreak. also don't do the break immediately as there are a lot of people queuing to do it and the servers have problems. if you run a standard itunes restore you will revert your phone to pre jailbreak so it doesn't affect your g'tee either.

a lot of the comments on here are from people that haven't done it and don't know what they are talking about. I have done it on three versions of IOS without problems.

if you do it then there are some very good apps that you can load up and modify your apple device. it's best to do a search for advice on apple oriented sites and read up on it. this isnt a good place to ask.

if it's free you don't need card details. your son would have known this as it shows a price on payable apps. it doesn't take the cash and not tell you.

if you want to confirm what I said here is cydia, it's the online store for jailbroken users. cydia.saurik.com/
its' where you install apps for jailbroken devices.

to jailbreak go to "jailbreaking" tools, such as evasi0n or redsn0w.

What a load of misinformation in here.

Jailbreaking is a way to remove restrictions from iOS-based devices so that you can install non-vetted applications and access the filesystem of your device. A jailbreak relies on exploits being found in iOS, so it always takes a long time for new releases and new products to be 'jailbroken'.

Because my iPad 2 is jailbroken, I can attach a battery-powered 1TB portable hard drive to the tablet via the Camera Connection Kit and play my entire film and TV collection using XBMC.

I can also pirate App Store apps, 'steal' in-app purchases using LocalIAPStore, download 'tweaks' to improve the user-friendliness of iOS, tinker with more settings than I could with 'vanilla' iOS and theme my device using WinterBoard.

What's more, your warranty is not 'voided', if you need to take your device to Apple then just restore the device in iTunes and it'll be set up as a new device.

apple dont really seem to care i had a jailbroken 3gs which i took for a swim still jailbroken as was unable to restore
screen was dead took to apple store expecting to pay 130 squid for replacement they waived the charge and did not care about the jailbreak at all
