What Graphics Card Should i Get?

    Banned
Hi all. I've currently got a ati 2400xt and it does surprisingly well, i can play most games on medium if not low settings. I want to upgrade to something with a bit more omph. Willing to pay £100ish at the max but would also like an idea of what cheaper ones there are ie. sub £50 cards. Any help would be swell and anyone selling a cheap card would be even better! Cheers

depends on how much you are willing to pay (very generic comment):

Best stuff (off the top of my head) =
    £80 - 4850
    £110 - 4870
    £130 - 4890
Yes they are all Ati cards, but the only reason is because I believe they are currently the best bang for buck.

great, thankyou for your input, repped!!

my personal fav for bang+buck at the mo from the nvidia camp is the 260, you can pick up an asus for about 120
whilst the ati are faster generically many more games are "fine tuned" for nvidia cards.

Before we make any recommendations... what PSU do you have?

i never thought about the games being "fined tuned" for nvidia cards although i see the logo at the start on most games i play, thanks mate.

can't rember the exact make without having a look but it's a 600w gold one.

I'd take a definite look at it to ascertain the exact model; it could be pap and need replacing or could be fit for the job.

    it's a colours-IT 550w gold psu.

Thought it might be a CIT PSU when you said gold lol, just wasn't sure.

If you're going along the lines of a GTX260/HD4870/HD4890, I'd get this:- ebuyer.com/pro…946

Anything like the HD4850 or lesser, this should be OK:- ebuyer.com/pro…596

lol, i like my gold. So do you think the HD4850 is the most it would handle or is it the best i can get for my money?

EDIT: Confused, i'm looking for graphics cards, you linked to psu's?

You will need a new PSU - I wouldn't trust that one at all, and the last thing you want is a crap PSU taking out your whole system.

Are the sorts of things you would be looking at IMO, they are all fairly good deals to boot. Just depends on how much you can spend overall. Around £50 look at the HD4670.

Remember though with ATI's new 5 series cards coming out it may be wise to wait a little and see if these prices drop. They may, they may not.

you don't need a new PSU. The debate over how reliable a cheap PSU is has nothing to do with the power needed for these cards - and even if the efficiency is only 70-odd percent it will be enough.

that's what i would have thought, the person whom i got the psu of said he had a 4850 running fine on it.
