What happens to your mobile number when you cancel a contract?

Hi. I'm planning on cancelling my mobile contract (Vodafone) and was wondering what will happen to my number? Will the sim just become 'Pay As You Go'? Thanks.

you will need to tell them to make it a pay as you go if that is what you want. If you just cancel the sim will just become inactive and will not work after the cancellation date

I think the number then goes into hibernation for around 6m and is then reallocated to a new contract somewhere.

Thanks for the replies

The times when I've cancelled a contract, I've been told the number automatically goes over to PAYG. This was a few years ago mind you, but it was the same for Orange and Vodafone.

If the number was ported from another network it goes back to them.

It goes to a 'hold pot' for 6 months after that it's becomes available to be reissued on whichever acc type it came from (contract or payg). While its in the hold pot its inaccessible to anyone...

i cancelled my contract with 02 about 12 months ago, but they are now saying that i never did cancel and have continued to debit my bank account (i no i should of checked my bank statements more carefully, but with so many dd's going out i never noticed, foolish i no)so i have a dispute with them, i have rung my old mobile number and it went straight to voicemail on an orange contract, so it looks like its been allocated to someone else, so o2 are charging me for a number which is no longer mine. does anyone think i may have a change of a refund, o2 are saying they will cancel the contract but will not refund!
